5 Simple Tips to Keep Your Car Safe from Thieves

Sometimes, we go on auto pilot when it comes to our car. We’re used to driving to many of the same places and used to perhaps parking in the same location each and every night. And even though habit and routine can be good things, it’s always a good idea to make sure that you’re always keeping your car as safe from potential thieves as possible. Your vehicle is a big investment!

Here are a few tips you can keep in mind to give you that extra edge against car thieves.

Avoid Leaving Valuables In Your Car

We know, we know. It can be a pain to always have to remove things from your car at the end of the day, but if you’re leaving something in sight that may be of some value, it may catch the eye of someone who’s willing to break into your car to get it.

Park Where There’s Light

Parking where it’s well-lit is always a good idea, no matter where you are. If your home doesn’t have any external lighting, perhaps it’s time to start looking into adding some.

Lock Your Car

Seems pretty simple, right? We can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen people post on social media about reminding people to lock their car doors because they just had something stolen overnight from their own unlocked car.

Shut Your Windows and Sun Roof

Again, a pretty simple fix. But, if a thief can get into your car easily, they are probably going to go for it. If they have trouble getting in, the odds are better that they will move on.

Consider an Anti-Theft Device

Many new cars already come with some sort of alarm or theft deterrent built in, which is great. If your car doesn’t have one, or if you simply want to upgrade what you already have, it can pay off to be overly safe.

As always, we’re here for you if you find yourself in a lock out situation. Call us (484) 891-1922.

A specialty menu will feature Irish staples like corned beef and cabbage.

Molly’s Irish Grille and Sports Pub in Bethlehem

Molly’s may be the epicenter of all Irish happenings in the Lehigh Valley this weekend. It’s a post Bethlehem Parade (we’ll get to that in a minute) spot and will have Irish dancers and bagpipers on Saturday as well!

Porters’ Pub in Easton

Porters’ Pub is opening up at 9 a.m. on Saturday for the first time since it was established in the early 1990s! Look for possibly the most authentic Irish menu in the Lehigh Valley.

Gadgets to Help You Not Lose Your Keys

How many times have you been in a hurry to drive somewhere or really needed to get in the house, but oops, can’t find your keys? Our guess is dozens of times. Recently there have been many products coming out to solve this issue every person faces on a daily basis. Some of the best have come from sites like Kickstarter or indiegogo and are becoming wildly popular.

Tile Mate

Easily the most recognizable of the group is tile. This company creates a variety of trackers that can be attached to key chains, backpacks or purses. Once you get the product all you need to is set up the app created by tile and you’re all set to find your keys, phone, wallet!

TrackR bravo

Another popular company is TrackR. They also sells a small tracking device that you can attached to any keychain or throw in a purse or wallet. The TrackR products do have the interesting feature of doubling as a phone finder, press on your TrackR device and your phone will start ringing. In that regard the more you have the better, you’ll never lose your phone or keys again.

Key Ringer

Now this one may not be the most innovative or new product but you better bet it gets the job done. The KeyRinger XL by Key Ringer is one of the loudest lost key finders on the market. As long as you have one of the two in a set you can press the button and the other will start ringing, very loudly. However if the volume is an issue it is reprogrammable to be softer, or louder if you’d really like.

How Keys Are Made (and How 24/7 Emergency Locksmith Can Make Yours)

An enigma to some and a daily craft for others, the art of key making takes many different forms. Keys cade be duplicated, made from the using just the lock itself, by cutting them with a laser, among many other possibilities. Each way is unique to how it actually pops out a key.

Key duplicators are exactly what they sound like; they make copies of keys from existing ones. Something like this is used when you lose a spare or just need another set of house keys for a boyfriend or girlfriend. The machine uses the existing key as a guide to cut a blank one by grinding it down to match the grooves of the old key.

Code cutters are used when someone loses a key, the most common reason really. How can you make a key from a lock? You have a machine that measures the depth of each groove in the lock and then can be cut into a new blank key. Some keys actually have their ‘key code’ printed on them, as well as some locks, making this process much quicker. Replacing a lost car key is similar although is a little more difficult to key the key code as they have to use your VIN, make, and model of the car to figure it out.

Laser cutters are used for a key that works in a different type of lock. Not all locks use a tumbler method; some use a slider system that requires the keys to be based off of thickness of groves on the side of the key as well. These keys are meant for cars so people can’t use generic keys to break into them, but need a real key to actually work. Funny enough no lasers are used in this machine; it is actually a high-speed bit that uses the ‘key code’ to create grooves and depth at the same time.

24/7 Emergency Locksmith can help you if you need a new key, on the spot. Call us at (484) 891-1922 for 24/7 service.

5 Signs That Your Ignition is On Its Way Out

24/7 Emergency Locksmith can solve 99% of ignition problems same day and same hour from being called. Our prices are far cheaper than dealerships and far faster than mechanics. When you are stuck, cannot or do not want to wait, call us for immediate help.

Here are a few signs to look for that will tell you if your ignition may be on its last legs.

Your Car Just Won’t Start

One of the telltale signs is that your car simply won’t start. You may get the engine to crank, but it will probably do so pretty slowly if your ignition is failing.

Your Turn the Key and Nothing Happens

If absolutely nothing happens when you turn your key in the ignition it could be a dead battery, but it could also be a that the ignition switch isn’t working.

Your Car Stalls While Driving

If you’re having issues with your car stalling while you’re driving (not while sitting idle) it could mean that your ignition is having some issues.

Your Key Won’t Turn

If you’re not able to turn the key in the ignition, make sure that the ignition lock is not in place by turning the wheel back and forth. If you still can’t get the key to turn, it may mean that your ignition is worn.

Your Dashboard Lights are Flickering

While this isn’t the most common sign, if you notice that your dashboard lights are flickering while the car is in motion, it could mean that your ignition is close to its last day.

If you notice any of these signs, please be sure to get in touch with 24/7 Emergency Locksmith! Call us at (484) 891-1922.

What To Do If Your Key Breaks In The Lock

Breaking a key off in a lock has to be one of the most frustrating moments. And while we urge you to contact us when there is an issue you don’t feel comfortable. Here are at least a few tips for you to try if your key breaks off in your lock.

1. First, Don’t Try Your Key Again

Some think that using the key again may somehow help to jimmy the lock in some way. Don’t do it. All it will probably do is push the broken part of the key even further into the lock.

2. Tweezers May Help

The first thin many people do when they break their key off in a lock is to look for some sort of tool to help them out. One of the most simple tools is a pair of tweezers. We only really recommend trying this method if a bit of the key is still hanging out of the lock. Otherwise, you may end up pushing the key further into the lock.

3. Super Glue?

Believe it or not, super glue MAY help you get a key out of a lock. If you’re able to put some glue on the end of something, such as a match, and then adhere it to the key. Again, DO NOT try this method if the broken key in the lock is not visible or easy to access.

4. Bottom Line

You’re going to be frustrated, and you probably won’t have the best of luck getting that key out if you can’t see a piece of it hanging out of the lock. If you’ve exhausted your methods and your patience is wearing thing, please be sure to contact 24/7 Emergency Locksmith!

The “S” Method Parallel Parking Tips From 24/7 Emergency Locksmith

Before you can lock your car, you have to be able to park it effectively. And, while we all think we’re the best parkers in the history of the world, we can always use a bit of a refresher when it comes to parallel parking.

Take a look at one of the most common parallel parking methods, the “S” Method.

1. Turn on your signal and pull up about three feet away from the car you plan to park behind. You’ll want to align your back tires with the other car’s back bumper

2. Put your car into reverse and then turn your steering wheel all the way to the right.

3. Back up until your car is now at a 45 degree angle from its original position, and then stop.

4. Now, turn your wheels all the way to the left.

5. Back up and into the spot slowly until your car is now parallel with the curb.

6. You should be about or less than 12 inches from the curb.

Practice makes perfect!

The History of Locksmiths

There are many things that we have nowadays that we did not always have available to us. Things like phones, motor vehicles, laptops, and other items that make life more convenient. But one thing that people did have back in ancient Egypt and Babylon, were locks and keys. Locks were used for the same reason they are today, to keep possessions and goods safe from thieves.

The First Locks

The first locks were wooden with large wooden keys. According to History Cooperative, this early lock and key method was adopted by ancient Greece, Rome, China, and more. Wealthy Romans would use locks and wear the key as a ring, keeping it close and showing status.

Metal Locks

Then the metal locks started showing up. In about 900 AD, the first metal locks were made of iron or brass and soon spread through Europe. Between the 14th and 17th centuries, locksmithing had become a profession and they were beginning to get crafty with their metal work. Locksmiths would work on locks and keys with special and beautiful designs for nobility. These intricate locks were often designed to resemble royal symbols and crests.

In the 18th century, locksmiths began making more locks and keys that were more durable and secure, improving the technology right along with the aesthetics. It was during the industrial revolution, when locks and keys finally saw improved complexity.

Robert Barron perfected the lever tumbler lock, this was a sophisticated lock that was more secure and was better at keeping intruders out. This type of lock requires the lever to be lifted to a specific height, not too high and not too low. This lock structure is still used today.

In 1817 Jeremiah Chubb designed a lock that was difficult to pick and would actually show signs that it had been tampered with. Chubb and his brother started a locksmithing business and designed locks that were even better. They invented the lock that used six levers rather than four. They also created the disc that went around the keyhole to keep pickers from seeing the levers inside.

Locks Today

Another few lock designs were created and used and in 1848, Linus Yale created the modern version of the double-acting tumbler lock that we still use today. This design used different length pins, which will stop locks from opening without the correct key.

While locks have improved majorly throughout the centuries, locksmiths will never be out of a job. Many locksmiths work their own business, doing residential and car locksmith tasks. They have the ability to fix our locks, make us new keys, and unlock our homes and cars if we ever get locked out. Many people take locksmiths for granted, until we need them. Luckily, you will always be able to find the help you need. At 24/7 Emergency Locksmith, we can help you with your car and home lock issues. Contact us today, we will be there to help!
