How Keys Are Made (and How 24/7 Emergency Locksmith Can Make Yours)

An enigma to some and a daily craft for others, the art of key making takes many different forms. Keys cade be duplicated, made from the using just the lock itself, by cutting them with a laser, among many other possibilities. Each way is unique to how it actually pops out a key.

Key duplicators are exactly what they sound like; they make copies of keys from existing ones. Something like this is used when you lose a spare or just need another set of house keys for a boyfriend or girlfriend. The machine uses the existing key as a guide to cut a blank one by grinding it down to match the grooves of the old key.

Code cutters are used when someone loses a key, the most common reason really. How can you make a key from a lock? You have a machine that measures the depth of each groove in the lock and then can be cut into a new blank key. Some keys actually have their ‘key code’ printed on them, as well as some locks, making this process much quicker. Replacing a lost car key is similar although is a little more difficult to key the key code as they have to use your VIN, make, and model of the car to figure it out.

Laser cutters are used for a key that works in a different type of lock. Not all locks use a tumbler method; some use a slider system that requires the keys to be based off of thickness of groves on the side of the key as well. These keys are meant for cars so people can’t use generic keys to break into them, but need a real key to actually work. Funny enough no lasers are used in this machine; it is actually a high-speed bit that uses the ‘key code’ to create grooves and depth at the same time.

Tips to Prevent Burglary While on Vacation

Going on vacation is supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable not stressful and worrisome, so why should you have to think about whether or not your homestead is going to be ok while you are gone? You don’t need a high tech security system, which is what most people think. By implementing some of these small tips and tricks you can enjoy that nice sea breeze knowing your house is safe and sound.

Stop Newspaper Delivery and Hold Mail

One of the most obvious signs that someone is out of town is when their mail and newspapers begin to pile up. If you stop deliveries or have someone else pick them up for you your house won’t stick out, it’ll just be another house on the block.

Set Timers On Your Lights

Another thing a burglar will be looking for is whether or not there are lights on in the house for a few days. A way to avoid keeping your lights on the whole time you are on vacation is to set up a few timers. Have them in some main rooms of the house, kitchen, livening room, and maybe a bedroom and voila it looks like someone is home at night!

Don’t Post on Social Media

I know I know, everyone is always very eager to let everyone on Facebook and Twitter know the exciting place they are going on vacation. However, when you let your friends and family know where you’re going you also let all the burglars and thieves of the world know too. Just wait until you get back and post all your pictures from the comfort and security of your living room couch.

Four Places to Hide Your Spare Car Key

Hiding your spare key under a rock is so old hat (but you can still check out Instructables.com to make your own.) Having a spare car key is a good idea for a multitude of reasons. Of course, if you lock your keys in your car or forget where you placed them, knowing that you have a spare set is one of the best feelings in the world. And, if you gave your spare to someone else, you know that there is always another option if you lock your keys in your car or misplace them.

So, what are some of the best spots to hide your spare car key? Let’s take a look.

Hide it on the Car

This may not be for everyone, and probably one of the first places a thief will look, but hiding your key in a magnetic box on your car is one of the most popular places. If you’re going to go this route, try to find somewhere a little more creative than under the wheel well.

In Your Purse or Wallet

Sometimes the most obvious places are the best. Keeping your spare key in your wallet or purse makes finding that spare key, or having it when you’re away from home, that much easier.

With Your Neighbor

If you trust your neighbor, keeping a key with them can be helpful. Of course, if you lose your key at 2 a.m., they might not be that happy about it.

In a Unique Spot

If you’re hiding it under a rock near your front door, that spare key may not last there too long. Why not look for a few more unique spots on your property that may be a little harder for a random person to guess, but somewhere you’ll never forget. Hiding it inside vinyl siding or even using a fake sprinkler (instead of a fake rock) may be smart moves.

If you lose your key and don’t have a spare, you need to make a spare, or you can’t find either, be sure to call 24/7 Emergency Locksmith!

5 Signs That Your Ignition is On Its Way Out

24/7 Emergency Locksmith can solve 99% of ignition problems same day and same hour from being called. Our prices are far cheaper than dealerships and far faster than mechanics. When you are stuck, cannot or do not want to wait, call us for immediate help.

Here are a few signs to look for that will tell you if your ignition may be on its last legs.

Your Car Just Won’t Start

One of the telltale signs is that your car simply won’t start. You may get the engine to crank, but it will probably do so pretty slowly if your ignition is failing.

Your Turn the Key and Nothing Happens

If absolutely nothing happens when you turn your key in the ignition it could be a dead battery, but it could also be a that the ignition switch isn’t working.

Your Car Stalls While Driving

If you’re having issues with your car stalling while you’re driving (not while sitting idle) it could mean that your ignition is having some issues.

Your Key Won’t Turn

If you’re not able to turn the key in the ignition, make sure that the ignition lock is not in place by turning the wheel back and forth. If you still can’t get the key to turn, it may mean that your ignition is worn.

Your Dashboard Lights are Flickering

While this isn’t the most common sign, if you notice that your dashboard lights are flickering while the car is in motion, it could mean that your ignition is close to its last day.

If you notice any of these signs, please be sure to get in touch with 24/7 Emergency Locksmith! Call us at (484) 891-1922.

What To Do If Your Key Breaks In The Lock

Breaking a key off in a lock has to be one of the most frustrating moments. And while we urge you to contact us when there is an issue you don’t feel comfortable. Here are at least a few tips for you to try if your key breaks off in your lock.

1. First, Don’t Try Your Key Again

Some think that using the key again may somehow help to jimmy the lock in some way. Don’t do it. All it will probably do is push the broken part of the key even further into the lock.

2. Tweezers May Help

The first thin many people do when they break their key off in a lock is to look for some sort of tool to help them out. One of the most simple tools is a pair of tweezers. We only really recommend trying this method if a bit of the key is still hanging out of the lock. Otherwise, you may end up pushing the key further into the lock.

3. Super Glue?

Believe it or not, super glue MAY help you get a key out of a lock. If you’re able to put some glue on the end of something, such as a match, and then adhere it to the key. Again, DO NOT try this method if the broken key in the lock is not visible or easy to access.

4. Bottom Line

You’re going to be frustrated, and you probably won’t have the best of luck getting that key out if you can’t see a piece of it hanging out of the lock. If you’ve exhausted your methods and your patience is wearing thing, please be sure to contact 24/7 Emergency Locksmith!

The “S” Method Parallel Parking Tips From 24/7 Emergency Locksmith

Before you can lock your car, you have to be able to park it effectively. And, while we all think we’re the best parkers in the history of the world, we can always use a bit of a refresher when it comes to parallel parking.

Take a look at one of the most common parallel parking methods, the “S” Method.

1. Turn on your signal and pull up about three feet away from the car you plan to park behind. You’ll want to align your back tires with the other car’s back bumper

2. Put your car into reverse and then turn your steering wheel all the way to the right.

3. Back up until your car is now at a 45 degree angle from its original position, and then stop.

4. Now, turn your wheels all the way to the left.

5. Back up and into the spot slowly until your car is now parallel with the curb.

6. You should be about or less than 12 inches from the curb.

Practice makes perfect!
