Keep Your Lehigh Valley Home Safe During Halloween Season

Halloween is a ton of fun for adults and children alike. From Halloween parades, to trick-or-treat and trunk-or-treat events, to bags full of candy and fun costumes, it can be a favorite time of year for many.

However, it’s also a time of year when the sun starts going down a lot sooner than the summer months and has a history of mischief and shenanigans.

Here are a few steps to keep your house a bit more safe during the Halloween season in the Lehigh Valley:

Keep Your Lights On During Trick-or-Treat, But Not Totally Off After

You’ll want to keep your lights on if you plan to have trick-or-treaters and off after the event is over or you run out of candy. However, you want to make sure that you keep your motion lights on in case there are any other people still milling about who shouldn’t be!

Clean Up Debris Around Your House

The last thing you want is to have trick-or-treaters fall over debris or other items that you may have out and about leading up to your door. Be sure to clear your curb and keep it free of debris.

Use LED Lights in Your Jack-O-Lanterns

There really isn’t any reason to have an open flame in any of your jack-o-lanterns during Halloween when there are powerful LEDs that can do the job just as well and are way less dangerous!

Don’t Leave Candy Unattended

If you’re going to participate in trick-or-treating, then be sure that you’re actually participating. Leaving candy unattended is a good way for it to go missing quickly and for animals to get into it as well.

Make Sure You Lock Up

Having so many people around your property having a fun time may cause you to forget that you need to lock up like you normally do. Be sure that you follow your regular routine after everything is over!

Have a safe holiday season and be sure to call 24/7 Emergency Locksmith if you have any lock or lockout needs!

10 Simple Fall Car Tips to Keep it Running in Top Shape

The fall isn’t as popular as the spring to get your car checked and ready, and that makes some sense. It’s much more exciting to get your car ready for a nice, warm spring and summer than the impending falling leaves and colder weather. That being said, it’s just as important to take a look at your car to make sure that when next spring and summer arrive, it’s as ready as ever.

Here are a few tips that should get you rolling.

Check the brakes and the tires

Colder and wetter weather can make stopping a chore. Make sure your brakes and tires are ready for the colder weather. If you spot anything out of the ordinary, get your car to your favorite mechanic and get that stuff ironed out.

Check the Lights

It gets darker a lot sooner in the fall and winter. While we may not spend a lot of time outside of our cars when the headlights are on, nows the time to do that. Make sure that both lights are operational and with the same level of brightness. Clean dirty headlight covers or replace your lights if needed.

Replace Your Wiper Blades

Have you ever had your wiper blades fail in a snowstorm or in cruddy weather? It’s the worst. Make sure you don’t have that happen by replacing your wiper blades if they are showing any wear. It’s not a bad idea to have an extra pair in your car, either.

Make Sure Your Heater and Defroster Work

Guess what you haven’t used in awhile, the heat in your car! Be sure that you check to make sure that it works after a long winter of using the air conditioning only.

Fluids, Oil, and Battery

Getting into a routine of checking out these items is great not only for fall, but throughout the year as well.

We hope you have a safe fall in the Lehigh Valley! Be sure to call us if you have any locksmith needs.

How to Fix a Sticky Door Lock with a Pencil

Hey, we understand that not every single lock situation requires you to call 24/7 Emergency Locksmith. There are a few situations where you can help yourself out a little bit before looking to call us. Of course, if you’re ever not sure about a lock situation or don’t feel comfortable handling it yourself, please, do not hesitate to call us at any time of day or not.

A sticky lock, or a regular door lock that doesn’t turn easily, can always be a pain. Thankfully, fixing it by following the most common method isn’t that difficult.

1. Simply squirt a little powdered graphite into the lock. You can find these at any home improvement or automotive store.
2. Put the key into the lock and turn it a few times to distribute the graphite.
3. Your lock should be back to normal.

You can also get lead from a soft pencil and put it on the key, (it’s made of graphite) and then do the same thing with the key in the door lock. Just be sure that it is made of graphite.

If you find yourself with a serious lockout situation, be sure to call us at (484) 891-1922.

Lock Picks for Beginners (VIDEO)

We don’t encourage people to attempt to pick their own locks when we can do it 1. safer and 2. much more quickly. Besides, there is a serious chance you could damage the lock for good, and that’s never something you want to deal with.

That being said, it’s also always interesting to learn a little bit about how lock picks work and a few beginning methods for how you can get into a lock using a rudimentary lock pick kit.

Remember, be sure to call 24/7 Emergency Locksmith in the Lehigh Valley area if you encounter yourself in a lockout situation. There’s still nothing wrong with learning more about locks!

Where to Park and How to Be Safe at Celtic Classic in Bethlehem, PA

Celtic Classic rolls into Bethlehem every fall with kilts, the Highland Games, classic food, and tasty whiskey. And while the event is one of the most relaxed and enjoyable that you will find in the Lehigh Valley throughout the year, parking and being safe is always something that you should be aware of.

Taking the dedicated shuttle into the fest is never a bad idea. It can be found at 1525 Valley Center Parkway, Bethlehem, PA during festival operating hours.

As far as parking, you can always scour the immediate area for open metered parking (if you’re very lucky) or park at some of the paid lots that will open up on private properties. Know that if you do decide to park at a private lot, you’re going to be parking at your own risk. While many of these impromptu paid parking lots are in safe places and you shouldn’t encounter any problems, know that the owners aren’t obligated to look out for your safety.

City parking details include the New and Walnut Street Parking garages and the W. Union lot:
– 75 W. North Street parking garage – 2 blocks from Celtic Classic – $10.00 pr day (subject to change)
– 33 W. Walnut Street parking garage – 1 ½ blocks from Celtic Classic – $10.00 pr day (subject to change)
– West Union Boulevard parking lot – less than 1 block from Celtic Classic – $10.00 pr day (subject to change)

All of these parking locations are safe, but be sure to practice basic parking routines such as remember exactly where you parked in a deck, even if that means taking a picture or writing a note on your phone. While Celtic Classic is generally considered a very safe event, leaving at night from a private or public lot can always have its risks. Be sure to travel in groups back to your car if possible and have your phone or defense device out if you’re going back to your vehicle by yourself.

And, remember, if you encounter yourself in a lock out situation, 24/7 Emergency Locksmith is on call whenever you need us and we’ll be there in minutes flat: (484) 891-1922. Enjoy Celtic Classic!

Lehigh Valley Fall Car Checklist Items

The change of a season is always a good time time to do a few checkups on your car, and that’s not exception in the Lehigh Valley. In fact, since the Lehigh Valley is home to such a variety of weather throughout the year, it’s maybe as important as an area as anywhere else in which you should check your car out.

Here are some great tips from our friends at the Car Care Council:

Heating, Wipers & Lights

– Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly.
– Consider winter wiper blades and use cold-weather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.
– Check to see that all exterior and interior lights work and headlights are properly aimed.

Tires & Brakes

– Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure of all tires, including the spare. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads.
– During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.
– Have the brakes checked. The braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item.

Gas, Oil & Filters

– Keep your gas tank at least half full throughout the cold weather to prevent moisture from forming in gas lines and possibly freezing.
– Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter
– Consider changing to “winter weight” oil if you live in a cold climate.
– Check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.

System Checks – Charging, Cooling & Exhaust

– Have the battery and charging system checked, as cold weather is hard on batteries.
– Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. As a rule of thumb, this should be done every two years.
– Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.

Pack the Essentials

– Make sure that your ice scraper and snow brush are accessible and ready to use.
– Stock an emergency kit with jumper cables, a flashlight, blankets, extra clothes, bottled water, nonperishable food and a first aid kit with any needed medication.
