Musikfest 2018 Hacks from 24/7 Emergency Locksmith

Musikfest is a staple of Lehigh Valley life. In fact, it’s the festival that began the festival culture in the area. Believe it or not, Musikfest is the largest free music festival in the United States. Seriously. And, with that many people coming in, there are always a few ways to make sure that you’re not only playing it safe, but also getting the most out of the biggest music festival in the Lehigh Valley.

Park Safe

Downtown Bethlehem has two parking decks near center city at Main and North streets and at Walnut and Guetter streets. There will always be other places to park for a fee, or just straight up street parking. No matter where you park, be sure to set a GPS pin on your phone using an app like Google Maps or Waze to be sure you know where you parked.

Buy Tickets

Musikfest, at least in 2018, still uses the ticket method for purchasing food and alcohol. This means that you need to buy tickets at kiosks with cash or a credit card before you can buy food or alcohol on site.

Carrying Stuff

Everyone is going to have their own amount of items to carry. If you’re a family with small children, you’ll be using a stroller. However, if you’re a person who is just visiting Musikfest with friends, it may not be a bad idea to bring your own bag to secure your wallet or other items.

Ubering

Grabbing an Uber may not be the worst idea if you’re coming to Musikfest from out of town, or even a few blocks away. Be smart when you have a few drinks.

Watch Out For Lehigh Valley Locksmith Scams

24/7 Emergency Locksmith is top rated by customers and we pride ourselves on our strong reputation. We’re upfront and we stand behind our work.

Unfortunately, there are locksmith scams out there that may come up in your time of need, especially if it’s a lockout situation.

Here are a few things to look for when dealing with a locksmith.

Make Sure Your Locksmith is Local

It’s easy for a locksmith to pretend they are one. Before you call a locksmith, be sure that they operate locally and have a local address and number that you’re able to use.

Ask for a Cost Estimate

Ask up front for an estimate based on your situation. A good locksmith should be able to give you a quality estimate if the information you give them is correct. Once they arrive, again, if your information was correct, the price shouldn’t fluctuate too much. If their on-site price doesn’t match what they estimated, you might want to look elsewhere and not allow the locksmith to do the work.

Ask About Any Additional Charges

Some additional charges are a part of doing business based on your location and the time of day, but be sure to ask up front so that you are on the same page and know what to expect.

Don’t Let the Locksmith Drill Your Lock Except in Serious Conditions

It’s pretty rare for a locksmith to need to drill a lock and is only usually with high security locks. So, be wary if that is one of the first things that the locksmith says they need to do. You may want to look for a second opinion before going through with that type of service.

As always, 24/7 Emergency Locksmith is here to answer all of your questions and serve you when you need it!

Can Wrapping Your Key Fob in Aluminum Foil Protect it From Thieves?

While it may not be prominent in the Lehigh Valley, there have been reports of thieves throughout the country using special technology to steal the signals from key fobs, giving them access to your vehicle.

Clarkcom recently published an experiment where they tested the effectiveness of using aluminum foil to protect a keyfob’s signal from being detected.

Team Clark wanted to see if it really works, so we wrapped one piece of aluminum foil around a key fob and tried to unlock a car from about 10 feet away — it didn’t unlock.

Next, we moved closer to the vehicle — about a foot away — and the car unlocked with the foil around the key.

After that, we added additional layers of aluminum foil around the key fob. That blocked the signal from a close distance. The car wouldn’t unlock until we began unwrapping the fob.

The bottom line: Foil really does seem to block the unwanted signals if you wrap your key fob thoroughly!

But is this really necessary? If you park in a secured area, perhaps the answer is no. But for those times when you’re leaving your car in an open parking lot, one of these signal-blocking solutions may give you peace of mind. Source: Clark.com

A Few Tools of the Locksmith Trade

You probably don’t think too much about what’s in your locksmith’s bag when you call him or her to help you get out of a sticky situation. You’re just happy they are there!

We’re going to take a little bit of a look into what a locksmith carries around with them.

Super Mica Bypass Shims: Have you ever tried to unlock a door with a credit card? This is kind of like that, but way more professional.

Tension Tools: “The tension wrench is the first item to go into the lock, and you use it to apply a light amount of pressure. Doing so creates a very tiny ledge – along what we in the trade call ‘The Shearline’ – meaning whether you’re picking, raking, bumping, whatever, the pins have somewhere to ‘sit’ while the other pins are being worked. Get all 5 pins to sit on the shearline and the lock opens. Tension is VERY important, and so are your tension tools.” Source: UKBumpKeys

Half Diamond Lock Pick: “This popular pick form is exclusively used for setting individual pins in the lock. The technique is basically the same as for hook picks. However, due to the triangular form of the pick, the depth for pressing pins down is here limited. Thus, the pins can only be pressed down, until the half-diamond hat gradually widens upwards touches the cylinder core. This feature can be helpful especially at the beginning, as pressing pins too far is avoided.” Source: Picklock24

Hook Pick: “A hook is a great tool for single pin picking, but it has several other uses that make it very dynamic. How many uses you can get out of your particular hook will depend on the size of the hook as well as the size and shape of the keyway.” Source: Unitedlocksmith.net

Rake Pick: “These picks, such as the common snake rake, are designed to rake pins by rapidly sliding the pick past all the pins, repeatedly, in order to bounce the pins until they reach the shear line. This method requires much less skill than picking pins individually, and generally works well on cheaper locks.” Source: Wikipedia

Bump Keys: “When bumping a lock, the key is initially inserted into the key way one notch (pin) short of full insertion. Bumping the key inward forces it deeper into the key way. The specially designed teeth of the bump key transmit a slight impact force to all of the key pins in the lock.” Source: Wikipedia

That’s just a look at some of the tools in a locksmith’s bag. Of course, there are many more!

Some Quick Lehigh Valley Fourth of July Safety Tips

While we know much more about locks and keys than we do fireworks, we wanted to share a few quick tips to keep you and your family safe during the Fourth of July in the Lehigh Valley. The summer of 2018 is the first after a law was passed in the state that allows for more widespread usage of fireworks in residential areas.

The new law states that persons can light off legal fireworks, but they must be 150 feet from any structure and the property owner must be given permission. So, be ready to hear more fireworks this summer for sure!

As for handling fireworks, be smart and be as safe as possible.

Be sure to keep your home’s doors and windows locked. There is no reason to risk fireworks getting inside your home.

Children should never handle fireworks.

Adults lighting off fireworks should do so in a designated area as far away from other people as possible.

Have a pail of water or water bottles in case you need to douse any errant flames.

Never reignite a firework if it didn’t go off.

Never light more than one firework at a time.

Be safe and have fun this July 4th season, but take some time to be safe and keep your family safe as well. A little bit of planning can go a long way and help you avoid any possible problems.

Keep Your Parked Car Cool in the Lehigh Valley This Summer

The number one rule of leaving your car in the sun is to keep it locked, but not far behind are a few other tips to keep it cool for when you come back.

No one wants to get into their car and burn their hands on a hot steering wheel or wait for multiple minutes for the car to cool down.

Here are a few tips to keep your car cool this summer when you have to have it parked in the sun.

Park in a Shady Area
No brainer, right? Sometimes we don’t think about this though when we are looking for a place to park. Be sure to park somewhere cool if you can, it can make a world of difference.

Use a Windshield Visor
These seem to be more popular back in the 1990s for some reason, but windshield visors haven’t gone out of fashion. If you want to keep the inside of your car cool, these are a small investment to make that happen.

Keep your Possessions out of the Sun
Sure, you want to do this to deter thieves, but you also want to keep items like sunglasses out of plain view simply because they are going to get seriously hot and can even cause injury. This is especially true of any seat belt buckles or similar items that children may come in contact with.

Throw Blankets Over Your Seats and a towel over your steering wheel
Covering your steering wheel will save you some headache and covering your vinyl or leather seats with a blanket is going to make a world of difference for the backs of your thighs.

Park in a garage
Again, a no brainer, but if the option exists, especially in a downtown area like Bethlehem, Allentown, or Easton, take advantage of the shade!

Be sure to contact us at (484) 891-1922 for any lockout situation!

Simple Tips to Keep Your Lehigh Valley Neighborhood Safe

The Lehigh Valley is home to some of the best men and women police officers anywhere and we thank them for their service.

However, there are a few ways that you and your neighbors can keep where you live safe as well.

Talk to Each Other

One of the best ways to keep your neighborhood safe is to speak with your neighbors. The more you know about each other, the easier it is to spot something weird going on in the neighborhood. Be sure to let your neighbors know when you’re going on vacation or will be away for an extended period of time. Exchange phone numbers!

Start a Neighborhood Watch or Use Social Media

This is the next step to talking to each other. See if you local police department can help with a local neighborhood watch. If that’s not possible, use Facebook groups or social media like Nextdoor to keep in touch and communicate wherever you are.

Install a Security System

There’s no better way to keep a tab on what goes on around your own home than by installing a security system. The more that are installed in your community, the safer it will be!

Be sure to contact us at 24/7 Emergency Locksmith for more information on your lock needs.

Prevent Keyless Car Theft in the Lehigh Valley with a Microwave?

More and more people open their cars with a key fob via keyless lock entry. It’s almost second nature at this point. Think about it, when is the last time you’ve physically opened your car door with a car key?

For some, it may still be the way that they do get into their vehicles, however, for many it’s a thing of the past.

And while that ease of use makes your life a bit less hectic, it has also created a situation where thieves have begun using the same technology to get inside your car. By using relay amplifiers, some thieves are able to “hack” into your key fob and then use that signal to get into your car.

And while this isn’t a widely reported problem in the Lehigh Valley, it is still something that car owners should be aware of and should at least know how to prevent against.

Here are some tips to prevent car break-ins or theft via keyless thieves:

Key Your Key Fob behind metal

Thieves can’t use their fancy amplifiers effectively if your key fob is hidden behind something metal or inside something like a microwave. Get creative!

Park in a garage

Sure, this is obvious, but if they can’t get at the car, it doesn’t matter what they are using to try to break into it.

Use old methods

Remember The Club? There is still something to be said for “old-school” theft deterrent methods.

Increase home security

Using home security systems with cameras is a great way to deter thieves who are attempting to get at signal from your key fob.

Again, while this isn’t a widely reported Lehigh Valley phenomenon just yet, we want to be sure that you are aware of it and know how to guard against it!
