Four Times to Change the Locks on Your Home in the Lehigh Valley

Most people have been in a situation where they have thought to themselves, “Hmm, maybe I should change my locks.”

But, what does that really mean and why should you do it?

We take a look at a few reasons you should change your locks in the Lehigh Valley.

You Just Bought a Previously Lived-in Home: We all want to trust people and we all want to give the benefit of the doubt, but, let’s be honest, it’s best to start fresh. If you are buying a home in which someone has lived before, it’s a fantastic idea not only to get all of the keys from them, but to rekey the entire home.

You Bought a Brand New Home
: So, instead of buying a home from someone who has lived there for awhile, you just bought a home that was just built. No worries about keys, right? Wrong. Even though it’s a new home, there are still people who have had access to keys to your home including contractors and real estate agents. You’re always better off rekeying.

Someone Has Moved Out: No matter the trust level you have with a person, if they move out of your home after having access to keys to your home, it’s time to rekey that home. Your friends may have the best intentions, but if you don’t know where your keys are heading, you have to take care of yourself.

You Lost Your Keys: No one wants to admit that they have actually lost their keys. We are going to look to the ends of the Earth to find them. But, if you come to a point where you know that you’ve actually lost them, it’s imperative that you change your home locks right away.

Thankfully, 24/7 Emergency Locksmith is able to help you with changing your home locks immediately!

Call us at (484) 891-1922 and let’s get started.

Rekeying vs Replacing Locks in the Lehigh Valley

So you’ve moved into your new house only to find the former owner didn’t have a key to the back door lock. Or you’ve simply given out too many copies of a particular key and can no longer keep track of how many people have access to your property. Maybe you’ve taken over a business office and have no way of knowing who has keys and would like to limit access to those you want to give it to.

There are two options that can give you piece of mind.

The first is to rekey the locks. Rekeying is taking the old lock and readjusting it’s inner workings to work with a new key. From there the old key no longer works and a new key will function in its place.

While the process sounds easy enough, it is in depth and requires the entire lock to be removed and adjusted, the process and time is minimal when using a professional locksmith. The cost is also more affordable than lock replacement.

While it can help with some security, this method doesn’t add any additional benefits that a new lock would include.

The second type is lock replacement. It is just that. The lock and keys are replaced. The entire unit will be replaced with a newer and up to date model that include the most up to date security tests and features. The cost can vary depending on the lock that is being replaced, and have a wide variety of budgetary options.

If you’re not sure which method to go to, contact your local locksmith for the best advice for your unique situation.

How to Avoid a Locksmith Scam in the Lehigh Valley

The need for a locksmith can be an unwelcome and/or irritating situation. From locking yourself out of your car, losing the keys to your office building, or simply changing the locks to your new home, the moments that it takes to call a locksmith can be stressful enough as it is, and can be done in a time of panic, worry, or stress.

But when that time arises, there are some people who will try to scam your hard earned money at a when you’re most vulnerable and perhaps don’t have the best knowledge of what is going on.

Here are a few tips to avoid being scammed by a faux locksmith:

1. Find a locksmith ahead of time. The BBB and other reliable sources like Yelp and Facebook reviews can assure you that you have a real company to call if you find yourself in trouble. Just save the contact in your phone and you’ll have the info available immediately.
Avoid companies that don’t answer the phone with a specific business name. If someone just says the phrase “locksmith services” or something to that affect but won’t give an actual company name, chances are they’re not legitimate.

2. Ask for ID and written proof of a company with a name, address, and other items like website, telephone number, and even a company email. Also be aware of what the person arrives in. Most companies have a van or vehicle with the company name and logo displayed on it.

3. If it isn’t an immediate matter, get an estimate on legitimate company letterhead paper or from a company email. An email that is @gmail, @yahoo, @aol etc. is a big red flag. This estimate should include not just the lock cost, but also mileage and other additional charges that may be included in the final cost.

4. While PA doesn’t, there are 14 states that require locksmiths to be licensed. Those states are: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Maryland hasn’t yet implemented it yet, although they have now adopted this law. So if you are in one of these states, ask for that too.

5. If they say the lock needs to be drilled, especially if they have given little to no effort to open the lock prior, go with someone else. Not only does a professional locksmith know how to open almost any lock, but drilling is much more expensive and damaging to the surrounding frame of the lock.

What to do if you’re having car troubles and you’re with your children

If you find yourself in a situation where you are stuck without being able to get inside or start your vehicle, it can be an incredibly stressful time period. Those stressors can be increased with the addition of having children with you.

But what do you do?

Try to remain calm. If you’re upset, chances are your kids will also become more upset. To make the process of getting back on the road as smooth as you can, try to keep a cool head. You’ll get through this.

First and foremost, make sure that you are all safe. If you are in the middle of a busy parking lot or parked on a busy street, get to safety. A local park, restaurant, or store are just a few places that will keep everyone away from a busy lot or intersection.

If you aren’t sure if there are any safe alternatives for one reason or another, call the non-emergency police number. While different municipalities have different policies and regulations, many will be able to assist you so you can get ahold of the help you need.

Call for backup. Is grandma or your significant other nearby? If you can, call for a trusted adult to either hangout with you or pickup your munchkins so you can focus on what you’re doing.

If your children are a little older and able to entertain themselves, come up with some fun games while you wait for help to arrive. Counting cars that drive by, looking for different colored objects, or simply name things that you see. While the situation at hand might not be ideal, make the most of a place you don’t usually spend a lot of time at and try to focus on it from a new perspective.

Watch a show if your battery and data plan allow it. Streaming video services can be a godsend in times like this. As long as your battery and cell service allows it, why not pop on that favorite tv show to pass the time.

Have them do their homework. If it works out that your kids have their schoolwork with them, put that time they’d just be sitting around to good use.

Talk about what’s going on. While car troubles aren’t fun, stuff like this happens to everyone from time to time. By talking to your kids about what’s going on, what you’re doing, and why you’re doing it, they can have a mini life lesson about stuff that happens to everybody.

Hopefully you won’t have to wait too long, and then you can get back on the road and back to your regular parenting routine.

Uh oh! Why won’t my trunk open?

Uh oh! Why won’t my trunk open!

Many of us have been there and have had issues with a trunk of our vehicle not being able to open.

Perhaps you’ve accidentally locked your keys inside, or maybe the actual lock isn’t functioning properly. It could be issues with your key fob, or perhaps there’s simply too much crammed inside and those items are jamming up the opening mechanism.

But what to do? First of all, take a deep breath. Whatever the issue is, it’s fixable. Double check your surroundings and even your bags and pockets. Be sure that if it’s a problem with missing keys that they are actually missing.

If you still have access to the interior of your vehicle, you might have access to the trunk from a seat that folds down. You can get in there and remove anything that might be in the way of the opening mechanism. This may also give you access to an alternative method of opening a broken lock. While it isn’t by any means a permanent solution, at least you can get inside the trunk temporarily.

If it’s your fob, the battery might be out or the programming might have been lost. Regardless of the problem, the actual key should still work in the trunk until the fob itself is repaired.

If the lock is damaged, if you simply don’t have access due to a lack of a key, or if you just aren’t sure what’s going on or what to do, a certified locksmith can not only get you inside, but will also be able to point you in the right direction of what to do next if further repairs are required.

Common Locks for your Home

Opening the door with number combination with woman hand.[/caption]It’s important to feel safe in your home. So while a lock on a door is made for specifically keeping that door securely closed, there are also different types of locks that are designed for either interior or exterior use.

Deadbolt:

This type of lock is one that pretty much everyone has heard of. It’s a metal bolt that goes directly into the doorframe and is one of the most secure varieties on the market. This type is also the one used mainly for exterior doors and is the safest common lock found in and around the home.

Lever handle locks and knob locks:

These locks are more or less the same, but with a physically different shaped handle. The lock itself requires a simple press of a button located in the center of the knob. While these aren’t as secure as a deadbolt, and alone wouldn’t work well for exterior doors, they are great when you just need a little privacy in your own home.

Keyless Entry Pads:

The keyless entry pad is a wonderful way to get in and out of your home without the use of an actual key. This method works great for homes with a large number of people. You only need a code to get in and out. The cons of this are the possibility of battery failure or the code needing to be changed from too many people knowing it.

Smart Locks:

These are the wave of the future. With an app or the assistance of something like Google Home or Amazon Echo, you can lock and unlock your front door even if you aren’t anywhere near it. Cozy in bed and not sure if you locked the front door? Just tell Alexa to do it. Have a ton of groceries to lug in and don’t want to juggle keys while your hands are loaded with bags? Just unlock with the app while in your driveway. Going for a run but don’t want to carry keys? Just tell Siri to take care of it before you pop on that workout playlist.

Are Your Keys Damaging Your Ignition?

If your keys seem to stick in the ignition, you need to give a little extra effort into starting your vehicle each time with a little wiggle, or if you find yourself needing a ‘special’ way of inserting your key, there’s a good chance your ignition has some damage. But how? One of the biggest reasons for ignition damage is simply too much weight on your keys.

From keys for cars, boats, homes, multiple properties, and heavy equipment, to fun accessories like that keychain your five year old gave you for Christmas, our keys can sometimes include a variety of items. While they might not seem like much weight while you carry them around day-to-day, they might be causing unseen damage.

While the weight can cause issues while the car is at a stand still, some of the biggest problems can occur when your car is actually in movement. As the weight of your dangling keys swings and shifts as your drive, the movement can significantly exacerbated the wear on the tumblers inside. This issue can eventually cause ignition failure, since the now worn tumblers are unable to properly engage.

Some experts have said that 9 keys or less won’t cause damage, while others claim that the ignition can withstand a few pounds. Regardless, it’s best to remove some of the weight if the keys simply feel heavy while in the ignition.

So what do you do? There are a few easy steps to make sure that you’re not stressing out your ignition.

Firstly, go though your keychain and take out anything that isn’t needed. You might be surprised what’s been hanging around that’s no longer necessary. Next, add in some removable keychains. These handy contraptions allow you to remove sections of your keychain and easily re-attach as needed. Another suggestion is to simply drive with the ignition key with nothing else. While this might not be the most practical, it also minimizes any damage.

Lehigh Valley Driving Tips for Easter Weekend

Easter may not be the first holiday you think about when it comes to lots of driving. But, it’s still a holiday on which a large number of families travel to or from the Lehigh Valley.

Be sure to drive carefully over the course of Easter weekend even if you’re not traveling to see family, and expect there to be a larger number of cars on the road than usual.

Here are some quick tips you can use to make your Easter driving a bit more safe this year.

Keep Emergency Numbers Handy

Make sure you have our number ((484) 891-1922) handy, or other numbers you may need just in case.

Map Your Route Out

We use GPS apps just like the next person, but you shouldn’t let them take total control. Be sure to take a look at your route before you hit the road. In fact, checking your GPS app before you leave may give you a heads up on traffic or delays along the way.

Give your car a once over

Check your tire pressure. Make sure you have enough windshield wiper fluid. Give your oil a check. These quick checks can save you some potential headaches.

Pack your phone charger

Those emergency numbers won’t do much good if your phone is out of juice. Having a backup phone charger battery pack is almost a must these days.

Keep any valuables in your truck or covered up.

It may not exactly be a Christmas haul, but Easter can also be a time where we have valuables in our cars. Be sure to cover them up if you are parking somewhere.

Be safe and have a happy Easter!
