How to Warm Up Your Car More Quickly in the Lehigh Valley

Winter is about to hit the Lehigh Valley and that can make not only for some of the most beautiful sights anywhere, but also for some cold mornings.

Anyone who has ever had to make an early morning commute knows that one of the worst parts of the day is waiting for your car to warm up.

Thankfully, nearly all newer cars are more efficient than ever and warm up much quicker than cars even five years ago.

That being said, there are a few ways to speed up even the speediest heating system by doing just a few things.

Turn on just the ignition first

After about five seconds or so, you’ll hear the fuel pump priming the engine, meaning it’s ready to heat up. Now, you’re good to start the car.

Don’t Turn the heater on just yet

Your car isn’t going to be producing heat right off the bat, so you don’t want to start blasting cold air throughout the car. Drive for a few minutes without the fans on before turning them on to warm air.

Start with the Dash fans first

Open up the dash vents so that the first batch of warm air is pointed at your chest, allowing you to warm up quicker. After you feel a bit better, turn on the foot vents as well.

Of course, this won’t work for each and every car, but it’s a good routine that can help you beat those cold winter mornings in the Lehigh Valley.

We Unlock 5 Locksmith Myths

We know what you’re thinking, locksmithing is all glitz and glamor and crazy parties, right?

Well, okay, maybe you’re not thinking that, but there definitely are a few myths about locksmithing that we’d like to get straight.

Locksmiths Aren’t Like the Ones You See in the Movies

Picking a lock in a movie seems as simple as taking a bobby pin out of your hair and fiddling around with it in a front door for a few seconds. In reality, locksmiths are trained professionals who would rather rely on their own tool kits and make sure they are taking their time to open locks.

You Can Copy Keys that Say “Do Not Copy?

There really isn’t any sort of penalty for copying a key that says “Do Not Copy” on it. If you need to make a copy, go for it, just make sure that you’re following the rules of your lease or ask permission if you need to.

Locksmiths Keep Copies of Keys they reproduce

Nope. Not true. This isn’t something any reputable locksmith ever does.

You can handle it yourself

Look back at how locksmithing isn’t like it is in the movies. While it’s definitely a skill that you can learn, and there are kits out there to get you on your way, opening a lock without its key should be left to the professionals. Not only is it difficult, but you also run the risk of destroying your lock altogether.

You’ll have to wait until the morning

24/7 Emergency Locksmith is available, you guessed it, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Call us and we’re on site quickly: (484) 891-1922.

How to Open a Frozen Car Door in the Lehigh Valley

A frozen car door can absolutely ruin a morning commute. There’s nothing worse than being all ready to head out to work, school, or a road trip only to realize you’re going to spend some time getting your car door open.

Here are some tips that can help you out in a frozen door situation.

Think ahead

Stick a towel or rag between the car door and door frame just above the window. When you go to open your door in the morning, you’ll have something to hold onto and pull from. This can prevent you from breaking the car door handle.

What if I didn’t think ahead?

We’d be silly to think that everyone would think ahead that far, so coming out to find a frozen car door without having a towel stuck in it is a reality. First, spray along the seams of the car door with some windshield de-icer, which is basically two thirds rubbing alcohol and one thirds water. This can help to jiggle the door free.

Use a hair dryer

A hairy dryer? Seriously. Yes. We’re very serious. Use an extension cord if you need to, but spraying along the seams of the door with a hair dryer on full blast is going to do wonders for your stuck door situation. Just don’t be surprised if a neighbor puts your picture on Facebook.

If you get super stuck and you still need help, know that you can always contact us at (484) 891-1922 for any lock out situation.

Fall Lehigh Valley Home Checkup Tips

The change of the seasons is always a good time to take stock in your car, finances, and house! For today, let’s take a look at a few home items you can easily get through on a nice fall weekend.

Check Fire Extinguishers

These often go overlooked, but are either easy to confirm are still in working order or easy to replace. Make sure everyone in your home knows where they are located.

Check your smoke detectors

Don’t wait until you hear that super annoying beep! Change the batteries on your smoke detectors or check them to make sure they are still in working order.

Have a fire escape plan and fire ladders on second and third stories

A little bit of planning can go a long way, especially in an emergency situation.

Turn Off your Outdoor Water Faucets

There’s no reason to keep your outdoor faucets on during the winter months.

Make sure your Security Lights are working

Another easy enough test; make sure your security lights are working by testing them out at night!

There obviously may be some other items in your home that aren’t on this list, so take a look around and be sure to use fall to your advantage.

Where To Keep Your Spare Key

Locking yourself out of your house is never fun, but how do you make sure that you’re able to get back into your house if you do lose your key?

An age-old method has been hiding a spare key somewhere, where are the best places to hide a key or what is the best thing to do with a spare key? Let’s take a look.

With Someone Else

Putting your key with a trusted friend or family member is probably your best bet. Sure, they may get annoyed if you’re calling them at 2 a.m., but it’s a safer option than to keep it on your property.

Get a Smart Lock

Yep, this one has nothing to do with hiding your key. There are other alternatives out there that can get you into your home without needed a key. You’ll either need your phone or a passcode and you’ll be good to go.

Not On Top Of Your Door

Many people leave a spare key ridiculously close to the door they are locking. For example, leaving a key on top of a door jamb or under a welcome mat is the same as leaving a key in the first place anyone is going to look for them. If you must leave a key on your property, you want it to be a place that someone is genuinely not going to look or is going to have to work so hard to try to find it that it’d be very noticeable.

Behind a license plate

This is a pretty nifty trick (top photo).

Under a rock

Don’t put it under the rock directly next to your front door, but one that only you or your family members may know about.

The bottom line here is that it’s not the best idea to keep a spare key around your home, but if you must do it, make sure that it’s in a place that absolutely no one else would think to look for. And, if you do get locked out, be sure to call us at (484) 891-1922.

How Do You Know If Your Ignition Has Gone Bad?

Your ignition switch takes power from your battery and supplies it to many of the electronics throughout your car.

You can see why a faulty or dying ignition switch would be a pretty serious problem. No worries, though, 24/7 Emergency Locksmith solves 99% of ignition problems same day and same hour from being called. Our prices are far cheaper than dealerships and far faster than mechanics. When you are stuck, cannot or do not want to wait, call us for immediate help.

Here are some things to look for if you think your ignition is failing.

Your engine simply dies

Your engine can stall if worn switch contacts lose voltage. It’s a common symptom of a bad ignition switch.

Your engine wont’ start

If your ignition switch fails, it won’t be able to supply power to the starter motor or other controls. If these systems don’t get power, your car isn’t going to start.

Your lighting or accessories go off briefly

An ignition switch that is starting to fail can result in temporary loss of power to your car’s electronics. Flickering dashboard lights are a very good sign of this happening.

Trouble removing your key

If you’re having a hard time getting your key out of your ignition, your switch may be going bad. It’s time to give us a call: (484) 891-1922

These Locksmiths Helped Their Community During a Time of Need

Firefighters, EMS, and other first responders are some of the most respected and brave members of our society. They work any and all hours of the day and night and put themselves in harm’s way to protect those in their community.

That’s why it was so special to us to see this recent article detailing how locksmiths in one local community came together at the behest of its first responders to help in a time of need.

“Amid the fire trucks, police cruisers, and gas service vehicles, they pulled up Friday in two red vans. One labeled Patriots Lock, the other Brinks Lock.

They are locksmiths, what they called a dying breed.

As emergency responders went door to door Friday to make sure gas lines inside homes were shut off after the Thursday afternoon explosions that rocked the area, locksmiths’ services were in high demand.

“It’s the safety of the community,” he said, wiping sweat from his brow.

Ed Fenby, deputy fire chief in Quincy, said gas company representatives got into most of the houses Thursday night, but they were double checking on Friday for safety reasons. He estimated that they will have to check 8,000 homes.

“”Wer’e still going to have to make sure there is no gas, safety is the key,” he said. “The gas company is looking at all the meters.”

After the number of fires and explosions that rocked the area, he said, “they want to preclude that from happening again.”
In only a matter of hours, Colonna and his brother David MacEachern, who owns Patriots Lock, had picked dozens of locks to empty homes. And they expect they will have to pick countless more, as authorities work through a broad swath of houses to confirm that gas lines had been shut off.

“This is nothing I’ve ever seen before; it’s chaos,” said MacEachern, who recalled picking locks in Lexington for a week in 2005 after a gas explosion at one structure.” SOURCE: BostonGlobe.com

Here’s to first responders and also to those who understand the value of community. We’re proud of you!

Why You Should Always Lock Your Doors (And Who Doesn’t)

You might think that locking your home doors is something that most Americans simply just do without even thinking about. The statistics, however, don’t quite bear this out.

According to SafeHome.org, there are some areas of the country where only 54 percent of respondents to a survey said that they lock their doors every single time they leave their home. The Northwest and Northeast were the most trusting (see the graphic) with the South having more than 80 percent of respondents saying that they lock their doors each and every time that they leave their home.

Locking your doors should be routine, but we understand how easy it is to either forget to lock or to neglect to lock when you feel that you’re only going to be away from home for a short period of time. Lock simply can’t do their job if they aren’t properly locked and it’s important that you instill that thought in the minds of yourself and everyone who shares your home with you.

Thank you to SafeHome.org for providing the images below that give a little bit more of an insight into those who lock and don’t lock their doors!

Keep Your Lehigh Valley Home Safe During Halloween Season

Halloween is a ton of fun for adults and children alike. From Halloween parades, to trick-or-treat and trunk-or-treat events, to bags full of candy and fun costumes, it can be a favorite time of year for many.

However, it’s also a time of year when the sun starts going down a lot sooner than the summer months and has a history of mischief and shenanigans.

Here are a few steps to keep your house a bit more safe during the Halloween season in the Lehigh Valley:

Keep Your Lights On During Trick-or-Treat, But Not Totally Off After

You’ll want to keep your lights on if you plan to have trick-or-treaters and off after the event is over or you run out of candy. However, you want to make sure that you keep your motion lights on in case there are any other people still milling about who shouldn’t be!

Clean Up Debris Around Your House

The last thing you want is to have trick-or-treaters fall over debris or other items that you may have out and about leading up to your door. Be sure to clear your curb and keep it free of debris.

Use LED Lights in Your Jack-O-Lanterns

There really isn’t any reason to have an open flame in any of your jack-o-lanterns during Halloween when there are powerful LEDs that can do the job just as well and are way less dangerous!

Don’t Leave Candy Unattended

If you’re going to participate in trick-or-treating, then be sure that you’re actually participating. Leaving candy unattended is a good way for it to go missing quickly and for animals to get into it as well.

Make Sure You Lock Up

Having so many people around your property having a fun time may cause you to forget that you need to lock up like you normally do. Be sure that you follow your regular routine after everything is over!

Have a safe holiday season and be sure to call 24/7 Emergency Locksmith if you have any lock or lockout needs!
