How To Properly Clean Off Your Car, Lehigh Valley

Cleaning off your car in the winter is a fact of life. No one is excited to do it. No one enjoys standing out in the cold or the precipitation while they are doing it. But, the simple fact is that cleaning off your car of snow, ice, and other debris as the result of winter weather can literally save lives.

Every year, people are hurt or worse on the roadways as the result of someone not cleaning off their vehicle properly leading to ice flying off their car and striking another.

Get in the habit of cleaning off your car now! Here’s now.

  1. Survey the situation: Is it just snow? Is it ice? Is it not even worth driving in the current conditions? Take a second and see what you’re getting yourself into.
  2. Make sure you have tools available: Pretty much every gas station is going to have brushes or ice scrapers or both. Don’t wait until it starts snowing to buy one. Get one now and leave it in your car.
  3. Start from the top: Clean the top of your car first. It’s the area most people either forget or neglect, so do it first.
  4. Clear off all all windows and the sides as well: There’s no reason to have any windows still covered. Would you drive like that in the summer? All it does is make your more dangerous on the road to yourself and others.
  5. Scrape off all ice: Even if it’s just on the passenger side mirror, scrape it off. Clear your car off as completely as humanly possible.
  6. Check the roads again: Is it safe to drive?
  7. Be safe on the roadway.

Be safe out there this winter season and call us if you’re in a lockout situation! (484) 891-1922

Winter Driving Tips for the Lehigh Valley

It’s rather rare to have a winter in the Lehigh Valley without at least one good snowfall that causes businesses and schools to close. That being said, not everyone is prepared to drive when it snows. We put together a few tips to keep you safely on the road this winter season.

Stay Home: If you don’t need to go out, don’t. If you don’t feel safe driving, don’t. If you have an emergency, call 911. If you’re in a lockout situation, call us at 484-891-1922.

Drive SLOWLY: There’s no reason to drive quickly for really any reason in the snow.

Speed Up and Slow Down Slowly: Hopefully, you’re picking up a theme here. Whether you’re stopping or starting, you want to ease into it to avoid slipping and sliding.

Don’t Tailgate: One of the absolute worst things you can do while driving is to tailgate. That dangerous activity is even more dangerous during a snowfall. Give yourself at least five or six seconds between the car in front of you. Remember, if you slide into it, you may be the one who ends up at fault.

Don’t Force Up a Hill: Gathering speed to rush up a snow covered hill may seem like a logical step, but it can make your car much more unstable and increase your risk of running off the road.

Move Slowly Up a Hill and Don’t Stop: If you need to go over a hill, the best way is to maintain a constant speed and try not to break or accelerate quickly while going up it.

Be safe out there!

Learn More About: Smart Keys

What is a Smart Key or Proximity Key?

Smart key and proximity key are two terms to describe the same thing.

Smart keys are keys that may remain inside your pocket at all times. You approach the vehicle and the doors will unlock by just touching the handle, and when you enter the vehicle you don’t need to pull out your key, you just press a button or turn the ignition and the car starts. Cars equipped with this kind of new key technology are very convenient.

A convenience you will pay for if you ever lose your car key.

Smart keys tend to be fairly expensive, usually more so than their less sophisticated remote head counterparts. 24/7 Emergency Locksmith has special tools that allow us to program these special smart keys to your car’s computer so they will start the car and the buttons will perform their designed functions.

While losing your smart key may seem like a huge loss, rest assured knowing that our locksmith experts can replace your smart key and get you on the road again!

Ways to minimize losing your keys, Lehigh Valley

You’ve got your coat on, grab your phone, and go to grab you… keys… hold on. Wait. Where are they?! Dang it! You put your keys down somewhere when you got home from work last night and now they could be anywhere. After ripping the house apart, you finally track them down and roll into work twenty minutes late.

Ugh!

This is not a great way to start your day. Here are a few tips to minimize losing your keys.

Try to keep the same routine:

Whether you grab the mail, let the dog out, or put your coat in the closet, try to also keep the same routine with your keys. Put them in a designated spot where you routinely place them every single time they’re not in use.

If you don’t have a designated spot, get one:

A decorative dish in the entrance way, a hook to the door heading out to the garage, or a number of other convenient spots can be found to place your keys. Get in the habit of putting them there every single time you come home.

Add a lanyard or carabiner clip to your key ring:

If you find yourself with your hands full with groceries or coming back from a trip, you might also be carrying your keys in the same armload. Then when you put the items down, your keys can get lost in the shuffle. Rather than carrying them with everything else, a lanyard to put around your neck or a carabiner clip to hook on your purse or belt loop means that your keys are on your person, even when you place that arm full of stuff down. Then just take the keys and pop them in their designated spot.

Add a wifi/Bluetooth enabled tracking keychain:

If you try and try to stick with the above mentioned and it just isn’t doing it for you, there are a number of locating options that, with the assistance of an app, can be added to your keys. This keychain can be activated with your phone and then will emit a small beep, chirp, etc. and you’ll be able to hear your keys calling for you as they’re buried in the middle of the couch.

…and if you really can’t find your keys, we’re here to help! Call us 24/7 and we’ll help you get back on track if you need some new ones. (

When it comes to your security, some minor concerns with you locks and keys (or things that might not even seem to be concerns) can happen to anyone.
Here are ten things that could be happening with your home, office, or vehicle locks that you should be on the lookout for.

Key has trouble turning
Rust has formed
Fob keeps losing, or has a weak, connection
Lock not working 100% after freezing weather

These, and a variety of other issues can happen. So be mindful if you locks are acting, well, not to their full potential. Basically if you can’t just open your lock nearly effortlessly, something might be on the fritz.

So while these particular “issues” might not seem like anything, or if you just don’t feel like it’s necessary to look into further, most should be addressed ASAP.

You just never know when that minor inconvenience does a 180 and turns into an actual, and sometimes expensive, problem.

What to do if your car locks are frozen in the Lehigh Valley

It’s happened. It’s incredibly cold out, you go to unlock your car, and the locks won’t budge. You try the fob again and you can hear the attempt of the mechanism in your doors trying to work. Maybe the key itself? Nope! Ugh you’re locked out of your car from the cold temperatures and you just don’t know what to do.

Here are a few suggestions to get you back in your car and on the road.

Try auto starting your car:

By giving your car a chance to warm up from the inside, your locks may be able to warm up, therefore melting the blockage.

Heat up your key:

Do this one VERY carefully! Use a lighter or blow dryer to heat up the end of your key. Then insert it into the lock and the heat can assist in warming the mechanism inside.

Try a lock de-icer:

This small aerosol can fits in a purse or backpack. The tip is inserted into the lock and the chemicals inside melt the troublesome ice.
So prepare yourself for the winter with the mindset that you might get frozen-locked out of your vehicle and keep these tips in mind, just in case you need them.
