How to Fix a Sticky Door Lock with a Pencil

Hey, we understand that not every single lock situation requires you to call 24/7 Emergency Locksmith. There are a few situations where you can help yourself out a little bit before looking to call us. Of course, if you’re ever not sure about a lock situation or don’t feel comfortable handling it yourself, please, do not hesitate to call us at any time of day or not.

A sticky lock, or a regular door lock that doesn’t turn easily, can always be a pain. Thankfully, fixing it by following the most common method isn’t that difficult.

1. Simply squirt a little powdered graphite into the lock. You can find these at any home improvement or automotive store.
2. Put the key into the lock and turn it a few times to distribute the graphite.
3. Your lock should be back to normal.

You can also get lead from a soft pencil and put it on the key, (it’s made of graphite) and then do the same thing with the key in the door lock. Just be sure that it is made of graphite.

If you find yourself with a serious lockout situation, be sure to call us at (484) 891-1922.

Lehigh Valley Fall Car Checklist Items

The change of a season is always a good time time to do a few checkups on your car, and that’s not exception in the Lehigh Valley. In fact, since the Lehigh Valley is home to such a variety of weather throughout the year, it’s maybe as important as an area as anywhere else in which you should check your car out.

Here are some great tips from our friends at the Car Care Council:

Heating, Wipers & Lights

– Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly.
– Consider winter wiper blades and use cold-weather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.
– Check to see that all exterior and interior lights work and headlights are properly aimed.

Tires & Brakes

– Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure of all tires, including the spare. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads.
– During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.
– Have the brakes checked. The braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item.

Gas, Oil & Filters

– Keep your gas tank at least half full throughout the cold weather to prevent moisture from forming in gas lines and possibly freezing.
– Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter
– Consider changing to “winter weight” oil if you live in a cold climate.
– Check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.

System Checks – Charging, Cooling & Exhaust

– Have the battery and charging system checked, as cold weather is hard on batteries.
– Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. As a rule of thumb, this should be done every two years.
– Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.

Pack the Essentials

– Make sure that your ice scraper and snow brush are accessible and ready to use.
– Stock an emergency kit with jumper cables, a flashlight, blankets, extra clothes, bottled water, nonperishable food and a first aid kit with any needed medication.

Stay Safe in Lehigh Valley Parking Garages

Easton, Bethlehem, and Allentown all have parking decks that take the hassle out of driving around trying to find street parking (most of the time.) And while they do provide a much easier place to park, they are still areas where you should stay vigilant.

Here are a few tips on parking safe in Lehigh Valley parking garages.

1. Remember Where you Park

This is easier now than ever with smartphones being so prevalent. Simply jot down where you parked in a note app or text to yourself, or better yet, take a picture of where you are to make sure you don’t waste time walking around the garage.

2. Pay Attention to Your Surroundings

Don’t text or check your phone as your own the way in or out of a parking garage. You want to make sure you not only remember where you park, but you also want to keep your eyes or ears open for things that may be going on around you, especially at night.

3. Keep Your Keys or Self Defense Device in Hand

While the odds of being attacked in a Lehigh Valley parking garage are statistically slim, you always want to be prepared. Carrying your keys in your hand not only allows you to access your car much easier, but it also gives you a weapon if you need one. This goes the same for any sort of self defense device you may carry with you, such as pepper spray. Those type of devices don’t do much if they are stuck at the bottom of your pocket or purse.

Be safe when you’re out no matter where you park and, as always, contact 24/7 Emergency Locksmith if you encounter a lockout situation. We’ll get you back on the road quickly.

Love Locks on the Monocacy Park Bridge in Bethlehem

You don’t have to go to France to see an example of love locks adorning a bridge. The Monocacy Park Bridge, located off of Illicks Mill Road, has attracted its own collection of locks in the last few years, which are meant to represent a couple’s love.

According to Wikipedia, the history of love padlocks dates back at least 100 years to a melancholic Serbian tale of World War I. A local schoolmistress named Nada, who was from Vrnjačka Banja, fell in love with a Serbian officer named Relja. After they committed to each other Relja went to war in Greece where he fell in love with a local woman from Corfu. As a consequence, Relja and Nada broke off their engagement. Nada never recovered from that devastating blow, and after some time she died due to heartbreak from her unfortunate love.

As young women from Vrnjačka Banja wanted to protect their own loves, they started writing down their names, with the names of their loved ones, on padlocks and affixing them to the railings of the bridge where Nada and Relja used to meet.

While the romantic locks are interesting to look at and represent something near and dear to many, there have been instances where locks on bridges around the world have had to be removed by city governments over concern for structural integrity or aesthetic appeal.

There don’t seem to be enough locks on the Monocacy Park Bridge for the city to get involved just yet, but since the bridge is so small, it would be expected as more and more are hung onto it.

So, if you’d like to see love locks in the Lehigh Valley, be sure to visit Monocacy Park before they are gone!

Take a look at some pictures of the love locks below.

5 Ways to Stay Calm if You Locked Your Keys in Your Car

Getting locked out of your car can be an instant panic situation. This can be even more of an issue for those who are predispositioned to such panic attacks. It’s important to remember that, while the initial shock can be scary, you can not only get out of the situation quickly, but you can also calm yourself down.

1. Keep Our Phone Number Hand

Be sure to add 24/7 Emergency Locksmith’s number, (484) 891-1922, into your phone as a contact. This will make it so you’re already set up to call us and don’t have to use your phone to search for a local locksmith. If you’re in the Lehigh Valley area, we’ll come to you.

2. Slow Down and Breathe

Making a conscious effort to slow down your breathing will have an almost immediate effect on your whole body. Breathing more slowly will allow you to take stock in the situation at hand.

3. Tell Yourself to Take a Timeout

Much like slowing down your breathing, saying “Timeout” out loud can actually help you slow your brain down within a chaotic situation. Taking a timeout can give you pause to reevaluate the situation.

4. Look at what you can control

Your keys are locked in the car. You’ve already called 24/7 Emergency Locksmith, so that will be taken care of. Now, what else can you control? Be sure that you’re in a safe place. Be sure you’re on the lookout for the locksmith. Focus on things that you have control over and forget the things that you do not.

5. Smile

It may sound a bit hokey, but there is actual scientific evidence that suggests if you put on a happy face, or even just laugh at the ridiculous situation you got yourself into, it will help to calm you during a stressful time.

Remember, give us a call and we’ll help you get out of your lockout panic situation as quickly as possible!

Safety Tips for The Great Allentown Fair

The Great Allentown Fair is the unofficial Lehigh Valley goodbye to summer. It announces the end of the summer festival season and its end ushers in thoughts of pumpkin patches and apple picking.

That doesn’t mean you should look past the Fair, however. It’s still a great place to take the family and always full with some incredible musical performances to cap off your summer. This year alone features Sugarland, 311 and Offspring, and Niall Horan.

Just as with absolutely any festival in the Lehigh Valley, there are always safety precautions to take even though the events themselves are generally some of the safest you can visit with your family.

Park legally and remember where you parked. Parking can sometimes be tricky at Lehigh Valley events and the Allentown Fair isn’t any exception. Make sure that you don’t park in a tow away zone, especially if you’re driving with your family. There will be many side lots run by private organizations that don’t make too much of a dent in your cotton candy budget. Drop a pin on your Google Maps or other app before you make the walk to the fairgrounds so you can find your car easily after you leave.

Lock Up. This goes without saying, but we can’t tell you the amount of posts we see on Facebook from people who simply don’t lock their vehicles. Lock up!

Be prepared to wait in traffic. The Allentown Fair doesn’t have the worst traffic due to many different roads in and out, but it’s still something to plan ahead for whether you’re heading in or out. Going at off peak hours (right as it opens during the week) is a great way to skip the crowds.

You’ll need cash, but don’t carry too much on you. Plan ahead what you think you’ll need throughout your trip and don’t bring much more than that.

Be sure to keep our phone number in your phone. Call 24/7 Emergency Locksmith at (484) 891-1922 if you’ve locked yourself out of your vehicle at the fair or lost your keys altogether. We’ll be there faster than a spin of a ferris wheel. (Well, we’re not sure exactly how fast that is, but we’ll be there in minutes.)

Have a fun and safe time at the fair!

Why Can’t You Open a Car Door if Someone is Locking it Explained

Courtesy jalopnik
Jalopnik recently posted an insanely interesting article about something we’ve all encountered in our lifetimes.

Have you ever tried to get into a car as someone is trying to unlock it? Have you then tried to open it again only to see that they are trying to unlock it again?

The website Jalopnik went into some pretty serious depth in a recent article explaining why this phenomenon occurs.

Take a look at a quick excerpt…

The most basic explanation possible is that pulling on the handle engages a little mechanical piece inside the door, a piece that bumps into another mechanical piece triggered by someone else trying to unlock the door. Alone, either one would do their job unimpeded. Do both at the same time and they block each other.

This sounds like it’s going to be really easy to understand, right? You have no idea how wrong you are.

Door locks and latches are absurdly, mind-hurtingly complicated. Just stick with us here, and you’ll see. SOURCE: Jalopnik

Go ahead and hit up their link for a VERY in-depth look at why this occurs. It’s something that locksmiths have a fun time reading.

And, as always, please contact 24/7 Emergency Locksmith in the Lehigh Valley any time you have a lockout situation at (484) 891-1922.

Safe Driving Tips for Lehigh Valley Teens Heading Back to School

Like it or not, the end of summer is near and that means school will be back in session soon.

For many high school students throughout the Lehigh Valley, that means trips to and from school in their cars. While some may have been driving for a year or two, for many it is their first time driving to school on their own this year.

We wanted to give a few tips for teen drivers, even if they feel like seasoned drivers.

Turn the Cell Phone Off

If you don’t want to turn it off, keep it in your bag. Let’s just start out the school year with a steadfast rule that looking at your phone and driving isn’t just not a good idea, it’s also very dangerous. Don’t do it.

Turn on your Headlights

The days are going to get shorter and the mornings will be darker as the school year progresses. Turn your lights on in the morning and after school to make sure that other cars see you.

Obey The Speed Limit

Are you in that much of a rush to get to homeroom? But, seriously, obey the speed limit. There are a lot of cars on the road in the morning before school. There is no reason to drive dangerously.

Drive Alone

A teen driver with another teen in the car can double the risk of having an accident.

Take it Seriously

Driving is fun, but it’s also an activity that can be dangerous if not taken seriously. Understand the impact you can have on your life or someone else’s if you don’t drive safely.

Have a safe and happy school year!
