Watch Out For Lehigh Valley Locksmith Scams

24/7 Emergency Locksmith is top rated by customers and we pride ourselves on our strong reputation. We’re upfront and we stand behind our work.

Unfortunately, there are locksmith scams out there that may come up in your time of need, especially if it’s a lockout situation.

Here are a few things to look for when dealing with a locksmith.

Make Sure Your Locksmith is Local

It’s easy for a locksmith to pretend they are one. Before you call a locksmith, be sure that they operate locally and have a local address and number that you’re able to use.

Ask for a Cost Estimate

Ask up front for an estimate based on your situation. A good locksmith should be able to give you a quality estimate if the information you give them is correct. Once they arrive, again, if your information was correct, the price shouldn’t fluctuate too much. If their on-site price doesn’t match what they estimated, you might want to look elsewhere and not allow the locksmith to do the work.

Ask About Any Additional Charges

Some additional charges are a part of doing business based on your location and the time of day, but be sure to ask up front so that you are on the same page and know what to expect.

Don’t Let the Locksmith Drill Your Lock Except in Serious Conditions

It’s pretty rare for a locksmith to need to drill a lock and is only usually with high security locks. So, be wary if that is one of the first things that the locksmith says they need to do. You may want to look for a second opinion before going through with that type of service.

As always, 24/7 Emergency Locksmith is here to answer all of your questions and serve you when you need it!

A Few Tools of the Locksmith Trade

You probably don’t think too much about what’s in your locksmith’s bag when you call him or her to help you get out of a sticky situation. You’re just happy they are there!

We’re going to take a little bit of a look into what a locksmith carries around with them.

Super Mica Bypass Shims: Have you ever tried to unlock a door with a credit card? This is kind of like that, but way more professional.

Tension Tools: “The tension wrench is the first item to go into the lock, and you use it to apply a light amount of pressure. Doing so creates a very tiny ledge – along what we in the trade call ‘The Shearline’ – meaning whether you’re picking, raking, bumping, whatever, the pins have somewhere to ‘sit’ while the other pins are being worked. Get all 5 pins to sit on the shearline and the lock opens. Tension is VERY important, and so are your tension tools.” Source: UKBumpKeys

Half Diamond Lock Pick: “This popular pick form is exclusively used for setting individual pins in the lock. The technique is basically the same as for hook picks. However, due to the triangular form of the pick, the depth for pressing pins down is here limited. Thus, the pins can only be pressed down, until the half-diamond hat gradually widens upwards touches the cylinder core. This feature can be helpful especially at the beginning, as pressing pins too far is avoided.” Source: Picklock24

Hook Pick: “A hook is a great tool for single pin picking, but it has several other uses that make it very dynamic. How many uses you can get out of your particular hook will depend on the size of the hook as well as the size and shape of the keyway.” Source: Unitedlocksmith.net

Rake Pick: “These picks, such as the common snake rake, are designed to rake pins by rapidly sliding the pick past all the pins, repeatedly, in order to bounce the pins until they reach the shear line. This method requires much less skill than picking pins individually, and generally works well on cheaper locks.” Source: Wikipedia

Bump Keys: “When bumping a lock, the key is initially inserted into the key way one notch (pin) short of full insertion. Bumping the key inward forces it deeper into the key way. The specially designed teeth of the bump key transmit a slight impact force to all of the key pins in the lock.” Source: Wikipedia

That’s just a look at some of the tools in a locksmith’s bag. Of course, there are many more!

Some Quick Lehigh Valley Fourth of July Safety Tips

While we know much more about locks and keys than we do fireworks, we wanted to share a few quick tips to keep you and your family safe during the Fourth of July in the Lehigh Valley. The summer of 2018 is the first after a law was passed in the state that allows for more widespread usage of fireworks in residential areas.

The new law states that persons can light off legal fireworks, but they must be 150 feet from any structure and the property owner must be given permission. So, be ready to hear more fireworks this summer for sure!

As for handling fireworks, be smart and be as safe as possible.

Be sure to keep your home’s doors and windows locked. There is no reason to risk fireworks getting inside your home.

Children should never handle fireworks.

Adults lighting off fireworks should do so in a designated area as far away from other people as possible.

Have a pail of water or water bottles in case you need to douse any errant flames.

Never reignite a firework if it didn’t go off.

Never light more than one firework at a time.

Be safe and have fun this July 4th season, but take some time to be safe and keep your family safe as well. A little bit of planning can go a long way and help you avoid any possible problems.

The Four Best Spots in the Lehigh Valley to Get Locked Out of Your Car

No one wants to get locked out of the car. It’s not fun. It’s not funny. And, sometimes it can be downright dangerous. Whenever you’re in a lockout situation, please be sure to call 24/7 Emergency Locksmith at (484) 891-1922 at any time of the day or night and we’ll be there to help you!

All of that being said, if you do have to get locked out of your car, here are some of the places in the Lehigh Valley where the wait for your locksmith isn’t that bad.

Easton Farmers’ Market

The oldest open-air continuous farmers’ market in the nation is a great place to spend a bit of extra time if you have to. Not only is there some of the best produce in the Lehigh Valley area, but there are always some surprises, like some fabulous chicken pot pies!

Downtown Bethlehem

With so many fine dining restaurants, a nightlife that is equal parts party and conversation, and shops that offer just about everything you’re looking for, getting locked out in downtown Bethlehem isn’t THAT bad of an idea.

The Lehigh Valley Zoo

It’s a bit of a drive, but The Lehigh Valley Zoo is one of our favorite places in the area. Where else locally can you catch a giraffe feeding AND pet some goats?

The Allentown Rose Garden

Somewhat underrated, or at least under-talked-about, the Allentown Rose Garden is one of the most relaxing places to spend a quiet afternoon. Yes, you may be spending it waiting for your locksmith to come, but it could be much worse.

Be safe out there and call us if you need any help!

Keep Your Rural Lehigh Valley Home Safe

The Lehigh Valley is a beautiful place filled with wonderful cities, quaint towns, and rural areas where you can get away from it all.

However, living in a rural area brings its own concerns when speaking with home security. Let’s take a look at some ways to keep your rural home safe.

Add Security Cameras and Motion Activated Lights

Many thieves are easily deterred by simple motion activated lights and the presence of security cameras. Simply installing them on your property instantly makes you and your property safer. Adding cameras and lights to your rural property is a bit different than a suburban or urban home. You’ll want to add them to driveways, exits, and, corners, and even external garages and barns.

Add a Locking Gate

Rural homes should have locking gates if there is space to do so. If thieves are deterred by motion activated lights, they will most likely give a second thought when they encounter a locked gate.

Add Alarms to All Structures On Your Property

Having a simple alarm in your home isn’t enough, you’ll want to be sure to add alarms to all of your properties. In fact, a thief will probably start at an outlying structure before moving to the main structure. If they encounter an alarm in a garage, they are going to flee before they can get to a home.

Rekeying vs Replacing Locks in the Lehigh Valley

So you’ve moved into your new house only to find the former owner didn’t have a key to the back door lock. Or you’ve simply given out too many copies of a particular key and can no longer keep track of how many people have access to your property. Maybe you’ve taken over a business office and have no way of knowing who has keys and would like to limit access to those you want to give it to.

There are two options that can give you piece of mind.

The first is to rekey the locks. Rekeying is taking the old lock and readjusting it’s inner workings to work with a new key. From there the old key no longer works and a new key will function in its place.

While the process sounds easy enough, it is in depth and requires the entire lock to be removed and adjusted, the process and time is minimal when using a professional locksmith. The cost is also more affordable than lock replacement.

While it can help with some security, this method doesn’t add any additional benefits that a new lock would include.

The second type is lock replacement. It is just that. The lock and keys are replaced. The entire unit will be replaced with a newer and up to date model that include the most up to date security tests and features. The cost can vary depending on the lock that is being replaced, and have a wide variety of budgetary options.

If you’re not sure which method to go to, contact your local locksmith for the best advice for your unique situation.
