Broken Car Key in the Lehigh Valley? What Can You Do?

Yes, it is possible to break your car key. Just like the other parts of your car, your car key can become worn out over time and may eventually break. Your car key has the potential of breaking in the lock, the ignition, or breaking if you drop them on the hard pavement. While that last one is pretty unlikely, you never know! Car keys can break and applying too much pressure to them in the ignition may cause your older key to snap in half.

We’ve all been in a situation where a key has broken and the frustration is palpable. It’s not like you just misplaced them and have the chance of finding them again, your key is actually physically broken and there is no way for you to open your car or home. That’s the absolute worst!

If this ever does happen, contact 24/7 Emergency Locksmith before doing anything else! We will be able to extract your car key from the lock or ignition, carefully as to not damage any inner workings of your vehicle. After we extract the broken key, we will be able to cut you a new key, right then and there, allowing you to carry on as though nothing has happened.

What To Do If Your Key Breaks In The Lock

Breaking a key off in a lock has to be one of the most frustrating moments. And while we urge you to contact us when there is an issue you don’t feel comfortable. Here are at least a few tips for you to try if your key breaks off in your lock.

1. First, Don’t Try Your Key Again

Some think that using the key again may somehow help to jimmy the lock in some way. Don’t do it. All it will probably do is push the broken part of the key even further into the lock.

2. Tweezers May Help

The first thin many people do when they break their key off in a lock is to look for some sort of tool to help them out. One of the most simple tools is a pair of tweezers. We only really recommend trying this method if a bit of the key is still hanging out of the lock. Otherwise, you may end up pushing the key further into the lock.

3. Super Glue?

Believe it or not, super glue MAY help you get a key out of a lock. If you’re able to put some glue on the end of something, such as a match, and then adhere it to the key. Again, DO NOT try this method if the broken key in the lock is not visible or easy to access.

4. Bottom Line

You’re going to be frustrated, and you probably won’t have the best of luck getting that key out if you can’t see a piece of it hanging out of the lock. If you’ve exhausted your methods and your patience is wearing thing, please be sure to contact 24/7 Emergency Locksmith!
