Tips for Taking Care of Your Car Keys

Our car and house keys are one of the most important things that we carry with us each day, but we may not give them the proper respect that they deserve.

Here are a few tips on how to properly take care of your keys and get the most out of them over the long haul.

1. Security

Car keys are one of the first things that a burglar will target in someone’s house. Do you have a safe place to store them that isn’t inside a basket or on a hook in the front door? It’s a good idea to keep them in the same place each and every night. Not only will it make it harder for you to forget them, but you’ll also have peace of mind knowing that they are safe.

2. Got a Spare?

Having a spare key is a great idea, and one that some people tend not to undertake. Have a spare key hidden somewhere on your property that isn’t under a flowerpot in your front yard. Also, it’s smart to give a spare key to a relative or loved one if you are locked out or if an emergency arises.

3. Take a Look

Keys may seem sturdy, and most are, but they can easily bend or break like anything that’s used on a daily basis. If you notice a bit of a bend on your keys or they aren’t turning like they used to, it’s time to give us a call.

4. Did We Mention Security?

Treat your keys like you do your wallet. Make sure that they aren’t visible when you go out and make sure that you keep them in a safe and secure place on your person. If you do know that your keys have been stolen or lost, we’re here for you. Contact 24/7 Emergency Locksmith.

How Keys Are Made (and How 24/7 Emergency Locksmith Can Make Yours)

An enigma to some and a daily craft for others, the art of key making takes many different forms. Keys cade be duplicated, made from the using just the lock itself, by cutting them with a laser, among many other possibilities. Each way is unique to how it actually pops out a key.

Key duplicators are exactly what they sound like; they make copies of keys from existing ones. Something like this is used when you lose a spare or just need another set of house keys for a boyfriend or girlfriend. The machine uses the existing key as a guide to cut a blank one by grinding it down to match the grooves of the old key.

Code cutters are used when someone loses a key, the most common reason really. How can you make a key from a lock? You have a machine that measures the depth of each groove in the lock and then can be cut into a new blank key. Some keys actually have their ‘key code’ printed on them, as well as some locks, making this process much quicker. Replacing a lost car key is similar although is a little more difficult to key the key code as they have to use your VIN, make, and model of the car to figure it out.

Laser cutters are used for a key that works in a different type of lock. Not all locks use a tumbler method; some use a slider system that requires the keys to be based off of thickness of groves on the side of the key as well. These keys are meant for cars so people can’t use generic keys to break into them, but need a real key to actually work. Funny enough no lasers are used in this machine; it is actually a high-speed bit that uses the ‘key code’ to create grooves and depth at the same time.

What To Do If Your Key Breaks In The Lock

Breaking a key off in a lock has to be one of the most frustrating moments. And while we urge you to contact us when there is an issue you don’t feel comfortable. Here are at least a few tips for you to try if your key breaks off in your lock.

1. First, Don’t Try Your Key Again

Some think that using the key again may somehow help to jimmy the lock in some way. Don’t do it. All it will probably do is push the broken part of the key even further into the lock.

2. Tweezers May Help

The first thin many people do when they break their key off in a lock is to look for some sort of tool to help them out. One of the most simple tools is a pair of tweezers. We only really recommend trying this method if a bit of the key is still hanging out of the lock. Otherwise, you may end up pushing the key further into the lock.

3. Super Glue?

Believe it or not, super glue MAY help you get a key out of a lock. If you’re able to put some glue on the end of something, such as a match, and then adhere it to the key. Again, DO NOT try this method if the broken key in the lock is not visible or easy to access.

4. Bottom Line

You’re going to be frustrated, and you probably won’t have the best of luck getting that key out if you can’t see a piece of it hanging out of the lock. If you’ve exhausted your methods and your patience is wearing thing, please be sure to contact 24/7 Emergency Locksmith!
