How Hard is it to Pick Handcuffs?

The movies make it seem like almost anyone with a bobby pin can pick their way out of a pair of handcuffs, but how hard is it actually?

The simple answer is that it’s a lot harder than it looks, however, there are many different resources that detail how to get yourself out using a paperclip or some other ordinary every day objects.

ITS put together a pretty comprehensive video showing how it can be accomplished.

“The current “swinging bow rachet – type” adjustable handcuff design dates back to 1912 when the Peerless Handcuff Company patented it. Even the “double lock,” that we’ll get into later in the article, came about shortly after this. First off, why are we still using relying on this deprecated technology to keep our officers safe? Why are law enforcement grade handcuffs readily available at nearly any surplus store, readily available to be used on someone during a home invasion? Lastly, why is this simple key design still being used?” SOURCE ITS

Watch their video below and, of course, only use this for recreation or entertainment use. We do not condone you trying to pick your way out of handcuffs that you probably belong in!

Five Lehigh Valley Winter Driving Rules

Dr

If you live in the Lehigh Valley, you already know that snowy and icy roads are simply a part of the winter season.

So, what are the best rules of driving in the snow in the Lehigh Valley? Let’s take a look.

1. Learn to do donuts in a parking lot

This is the time of year where many teenagers get to learn how to drive by heading out with their dad, mom, older brother, older sister, or friend by taking a trip to the closest parking lot covered in snow! Empty parking lots full of snow are simply the best place to learn how to drive on snow. You can always do sweet slides by using your e-brake as well!

2. Stay off Route 22 and Route 78

It’s snowing? Well, it’s time to not even think about taking Route 22 or Route 78. While you can be the best driver of all time, many other drivers are not. Many drivers drive too fast for snow conditions, continue to tailgate too closely, and many times end up in accidents that stop traffic. Take your time driving and find an alternative route if possible.

3. Shovel out your parking spot, but don’t expect to keep it

If you shovel out a parking spot on a public street, is that your spot for when you return? The ages old debate continues to this day. Many people in the Lehigh Valley shovel out their parking spot and put lawn chairs or some other small object in the spot to discourage anyone else from parking in that spot. This is technically illegal, but that doesn’t stop many people from doing it. If you decide to put a chair in your spot, expect it to be moved and don’t retaliate if it is!

4. Make Sure Your Car is Serviced

Now is the best time to get your car to your local service station to make sure that it’s ready for the winter weather. Don’t wait until you’re stuck on the side of the road.

5. Don’t Drive

Some days it just isn’t worth it to drive. No matter how important your job is, it’s not more important than the job of first responders who need roads to be clear of traffic if they need to help someone. If you don’t need to drive in the snow, don’t.

Holiday Travel Safety Tips for Your Home in the Lehigh Valley

Yep, that’s Snow Camel
Millions of Americans and thousands of Lehigh Valley residents will be traveling during the holiday season. And, of course, driving safely is one of the most important tips that someone can heed when out on the highway.

However, there are a few other things that you can do to protect yourself, family, and home when traveling this holiday season, even if it’s just to Scranton.

Put that Smart Home to Use

Having smart plugs and lights may seem silly to some, but they can come in incredibly handy when you and your family won’t be at home for a period of time. Put them on a schedule and check in with your phone to make sure they are on or off when you want them to be.

Use those cameras

Security cameras that you can access with your phone, and give you alerts when something comes into view, can be a lifesaver. Check in on them when you need to and review any alerts as they happen.

Don’t Post Too Much Online

If you’re not going to be at home for a few days, don’t post too many pictures or tag yourself as being out of town. That’s a perfect way to let people know that your home is unattended.

Get Help for your mail

This time of year is the busiest for mail carriers and package delivery services. Since you probably won’t be gone long enough to put a stop to your mail service via the USPS, ask a friend or neighbor if they can check to see if there are any packages or mail at your home and either to take it with them or put it in a safe space.

Don’t leave a key

Don’t leave a key outside if you’re going to be gone for awhile (and maybe not at all.) Give a key to a trusted neighbor or friend if you need them to get into your home while you’re gone.

Most importantly, have a fun and happy holiday season from all of us at 24/7 Emergency Locksmith!

How to Warm Up Your Car More Quickly in the Lehigh Valley

Winter is about to hit the Lehigh Valley and that can make not only for some of the most beautiful sights anywhere, but also for some cold mornings.

Anyone who has ever had to make an early morning commute knows that one of the worst parts of the day is waiting for your car to warm up.

Thankfully, nearly all newer cars are more efficient than ever and warm up much quicker than cars even five years ago.

That being said, there are a few ways to speed up even the speediest heating system by doing just a few things.

Turn on just the ignition first

After about five seconds or so, you’ll hear the fuel pump priming the engine, meaning it’s ready to heat up. Now, you’re good to start the car.

Don’t Turn the heater on just yet

Your car isn’t going to be producing heat right off the bat, so you don’t want to start blasting cold air throughout the car. Drive for a few minutes without the fans on before turning them on to warm air.

Start with the Dash fans first

Open up the dash vents so that the first batch of warm air is pointed at your chest, allowing you to warm up quicker. After you feel a bit better, turn on the foot vents as well.

Of course, this won’t work for each and every car, but it’s a good routine that can help you beat those cold winter mornings in the Lehigh Valley.

We Unlock 5 Locksmith Myths

We know what you’re thinking, locksmithing is all glitz and glamor and crazy parties, right?

Well, okay, maybe you’re not thinking that, but there definitely are a few myths about locksmithing that we’d like to get straight.

Locksmiths Aren’t Like the Ones You See in the Movies

Picking a lock in a movie seems as simple as taking a bobby pin out of your hair and fiddling around with it in a front door for a few seconds. In reality, locksmiths are trained professionals who would rather rely on their own tool kits and make sure they are taking their time to open locks.

You Can Copy Keys that Say “Do Not Copy?

There really isn’t any sort of penalty for copying a key that says “Do Not Copy” on it. If you need to make a copy, go for it, just make sure that you’re following the rules of your lease or ask permission if you need to.

Locksmiths Keep Copies of Keys they reproduce

Nope. Not true. This isn’t something any reputable locksmith ever does.

You can handle it yourself

Look back at how locksmithing isn’t like it is in the movies. While it’s definitely a skill that you can learn, and there are kits out there to get you on your way, opening a lock without its key should be left to the professionals. Not only is it difficult, but you also run the risk of destroying your lock altogether.

You’ll have to wait until the morning

24/7 Emergency Locksmith is available, you guessed it, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Call us and we’re on site quickly: (484) 891-1922.

How to Open a Frozen Car Door in the Lehigh Valley

A frozen car door can absolutely ruin a morning commute. There’s nothing worse than being all ready to head out to work, school, or a road trip only to realize you’re going to spend some time getting your car door open.

Here are some tips that can help you out in a frozen door situation.

Think ahead

Stick a towel or rag between the car door and door frame just above the window. When you go to open your door in the morning, you’ll have something to hold onto and pull from. This can prevent you from breaking the car door handle.

What if I didn’t think ahead?

We’d be silly to think that everyone would think ahead that far, so coming out to find a frozen car door without having a towel stuck in it is a reality. First, spray along the seams of the car door with some windshield de-icer, which is basically two thirds rubbing alcohol and one thirds water. This can help to jiggle the door free.

Use a hair dryer

A hairy dryer? Seriously. Yes. We’re very serious. Use an extension cord if you need to, but spraying along the seams of the door with a hair dryer on full blast is going to do wonders for your stuck door situation. Just don’t be surprised if a neighbor puts your picture on Facebook.

If you get super stuck and you still need help, know that you can always contact us at (484) 891-1922 for any lock out situation.

Fall Lehigh Valley Home Checkup Tips

The change of the seasons is always a good time to take stock in your car, finances, and house! For today, let’s take a look at a few home items you can easily get through on a nice fall weekend.

Check Fire Extinguishers

These often go overlooked, but are either easy to confirm are still in working order or easy to replace. Make sure everyone in your home knows where they are located.

Check your smoke detectors

Don’t wait until you hear that super annoying beep! Change the batteries on your smoke detectors or check them to make sure they are still in working order.

Have a fire escape plan and fire ladders on second and third stories

A little bit of planning can go a long way, especially in an emergency situation.

Turn Off your Outdoor Water Faucets

There’s no reason to keep your outdoor faucets on during the winter months.

Make sure your Security Lights are working

Another easy enough test; make sure your security lights are working by testing them out at night!

There obviously may be some other items in your home that aren’t on this list, so take a look around and be sure to use fall to your advantage.
