Does Having Too Much on Your Keychain Hurt Your Car?

Some people barely carry any keys around with them. They have a car, house, and maybe a work and mailbox key, but that’s it.

Some people (like us) have keychains that may have too many keychains on them.

So what? Some of these keychains have sentimental value! One of them is from Disney World! One is a bottle opener we got at Musikfest. I have all of those photos at home. Let’s be honest, most keychains are totally overfilled and it could be hurting your car.

Is this just a myth? Well, let’s check with the experts…Snopes.

Origins: This belief is an ancient one — our oldest print sighting so far dates it to May 1960 when it appeared as the plot of one of the “Gus And The Model Garage” series run in Popular Science.

Unlike the venerable “purse hung from a car’s choke knob causes damage to the automobile” legend, there is a bit of something to the caution against having too many keys on one’s key fob. Say Tom and Ray Magliozzi (Click and Clack of Car Talk fame), “Actually, the answer is that excessive weight CAN damage the ignition switch. We see it most often on Volkswagens, for some reason. But it happens on other cars, too.”

The Magliozzi brothers are quick to point out that what constitutes “excessive weight” on a key ring puts the danger point well past what most folks routinely tote about with them. “If you have seven or eight keys on your key ring, you’re not going to do any damage. The ignition switch can handle that. But if you carry around 20 keys, that’s a fair amount of weight. That constant downward tug on the ignition switch can cause it to wear out prematurely.” – SNOPES

So, it looks like if you have a few extra items on your key ring it isn’t a big deal, but if’ you’re throwing pounds onto your ring and then using that in your vehicle’s ignition, you may want to rethink it!

Why it’s a good idea to change the locks of your new home

If you find yourself the proud owner of a new home, there are lots of exciting (and perhaps daunting) tasks that you have ahead of you.

While we’re sure you’re excited to start painting and reconfiguring the backyard, there’s a big step that you should consider before almost anything else, and that’s to change and update the locks of your new abode.

Firstly, and probably most obviously, you just don’t know who has a copy of a key from a previous owner. To be absolutely 100% sure that your home is only accessible to those who have your permission, you just have to press the reset button in terms of those locks.

Secondly, you have no idea how the locks were treated. Were they ever serviced or maintained? How long has the back door been sticking when you try to turn the deadbolt? Even minor annoyances can quickly transform into major problems. Do you really want to sour your new home joy with an unexpected lock issue?

Lastly, you have a chance to update and modernize your home security in a way that works best for you. There are a variety of modern locks that just work better. Plus, being able to choose a beautiful new front door lock is a great first step into customizing your home into something that is unique to you!

So if you are ready to start the updating process to your new home’s locks, give us a call!

Door Lock Problems You Shouldn’t Ignore

While we all have quirks to our homes, especially if your home is older, some of those “quirks” are actually potentially serious problems you shouldn’t just overlook.

In terms of security, your doors and their locks should be in working order regardless of age. If there are any issues, however minor they may seem, it’s best to have them assessed by a professional to assure those ‘cute’ little annoyances don’t turn into big (and expensive) repairs. Here are a few of the big issues you should be aware of.

Misaligned Door Latch:

If the strike plate and the door just don’t want to cooperate, just remember they weren’t always that way. At one point they closed perfectly. If you need to push and pull to get your door to close, it means the once aligned parts have now shifted.

Door Distortion:

Over time the weather can make a door change its shape. While it might look minor to you, it can do a real number on the locking mechanism that now how to work extra hard on the misalignment and can cause some rough and unusual wear on the latch.

Key Doesn’t Work Properly:

Whether your key just spins in the lock or you’ve got to use some force to get it to work, a lock and key that don’t just work correctly means there are major issues either with the key, the lock, or both. By continuing to force a lock to finally open, you’re just damaging the interior parts, and the key itself, making it work less and less every time.

Deadbolt Doesn’t Engage Fully:

If your deadbolt just barely locks the door, it’s just not doing its job. There are a number of reasons it could be doing this. Regardless of why, having a half-working deadbolt can seriously compromise the security of your home.

Faulty Mechanisms:

Sometimes, doors and their hardware just get old, stop working properly, and you can’t figure out what is going on. If you’re looking at your door latch and scratching your head in frustration, you’re not alone. There are just so many types of locks and latches out there.

So if you find yourself with a door issue, give us a call and we’ll be glad to get those doors and locks back in working order.

Three reasons a landlord needs a reliable locksmith

If you’re a landlord, there are a variety of reasons you should have a reliable locksmith. Here are three of the biggest reasons you should have one saved in your phone and ready to call if needed.

The first reason is simple. Your tenant might just lock themselves out of the property. If you or a property manager isn’t around to let them back in, then it’s important that you are able to give them access with a certified professional.

Another important reason you might want a locksmith’s assistance is because once you have a tenant move out, you probably won’t want to use the same lock and key for the next occupants. You just never know if they made a key copy or if that key they “lost” actually did go missing. A locksmith can change the locks and make sure the home is ready for the next people moving in.

The third big reason is if a key is lost, stolen, or if a lock is damaged by a tenant, a locksmith will be there to assess and fix the damage, while giving the people living in your property safe access back into their residence.

Owning property that you don’t occupy can have a number of challenges, but by having a locksmith available, it’s one less thing you’ll have to stress about.

Call us If You Need a Locksmith During St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations in in the Lehigh Valley

The Lehigh Valley area is known for its festivals. Local residents don’t waste any time getting right into the fun of partying as soon as St. Patrick’s Day comes around. Sure, there may be larger and crazier St. Patrick’s Days celebrations across the country, but the Lehigh Valley, specifically with Bethlehem and Allentown’s parades, is one of the best for family friendly fun.

The festivities get started on March 16, 2019 with the Parade of Shamrocks in downtown Bethlehem.

According to Celtic Classic (which organizes the parade), Downtown Bethlehem will be awash in green as Celtic Cultural Alliance hosts the 8th Annual Celtic Classic Parade of Shamrocks! The celebration will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2019. The parade steps off at 1:00 p.m., so get here early for the best viewing spots! The parade will kick-off at 10th Avenue & Broad Street. The parade route will continue east on Broad to Main Street and makes its way south on Main Street, ending under the Hill-To-Hill Bridge.

“We are honored to have your favorite local high school and middle school bands, community groups, pipe bands, dancing groups, local dignitaries, and businesses participate in the parade. Enjoy the festive celebration, then stay after the parade to enjoy some of the great restaurants and shops Bethlehem has to offer.”

The Allentown St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes place on March 17 and should serve to continue the festivities throughout the weekend.

“The first known St. Patrick’s Parade was held in Allentown in the late 1860’s. Almost a century later, in 1955, what we know as the modern day Allentown St. Patrick’s Day Parade was organized by business and political leaders through the St. Patrick’s Day Observance Society. The Parade ran from 12th and Hamilton Streets to the Immaculate Conception Church on Ridge Avenue.”

No matter where you end up this St. Patrick’s Day Weekend, know that 24/7 Emergency Locksmith is there to help you if you find yourself locked out of your vehicle or residence. We’re available 24/7. Call us at (484) 891-1922.

We spend a lot of time on the road and that allows us to see a lot of the Lehigh Valley. From Easton to Allentown and everywhere in-between, there are some simply fantastically beautiful spots to spend time.

That being said, time is also nearly always of the essence when we’re safely getting to our customers in a hurry. We know their time is valuable and respect that.

Thankfully, the Lehigh Valley has no shortage of professional, aspiring, and hobby photographers who pepper Instagram with stunning views.

Here are a few of our favorites from the Bethlehem area from January 2019!

Four Steps to Take If You’ve Been Burglarized in the Lehigh Valley

Having your home or apartment broken into can be a terrifying experience. There is a feeling of violation that goes hand-in-hand with the frustration over lost and damaged items. If you’ve unfortunately had the experience of being burglarized, here are a few things that can help you immediately following the incident.

Contact the Police

This is the first thing you want to do once you realize something is amiss. You want to make sure that the police are aware of the situation and can help you file a police report.

Take Stock of What You Have

You’ll want to go through your home or apartment and figure out what has been taken. Make a list of it so you can present that to your insurance company.

Go over your home security

If you have home security cameras, of course you’ll want to review the footage and share it with the police. If you don’t have security measures in place, now is the time that you may want to reconsider that.

Stay Calm

While you may justifiably feel anxious and worried, stay calm. The odds of a burglary happening at your location again so soon is very, very low. It may be best for you to stay with a friend or family member for a night or two or have someone stay with you if it helps you to feel more comfortable. However, with the police notified, any footage shared, and a reassessment of your security measures, you can greatly reduce the prospect of anything like that happening again.
