Uh oh! Why won’t my trunk open?

Uh oh! Why won’t my trunk open!

Many of us have been there and have had issues with a trunk of our vehicle not being able to open.

Perhaps you’ve accidentally locked your keys inside, or maybe the actual lock isn’t functioning properly. It could be issues with your key fob, or perhaps there’s simply too much crammed inside and those items are jamming up the opening mechanism.

But what to do? First of all, take a deep breath. Whatever the issue is, it’s fixable. Double check your surroundings and even your bags and pockets. Be sure that if it’s a problem with missing keys that they are actually missing.

If you still have access to the interior of your vehicle, you might have access to the trunk from a seat that folds down. You can get in there and remove anything that might be in the way of the opening mechanism. This may also give you access to an alternative method of opening a broken lock. While it isn’t by any means a permanent solution, at least you can get inside the trunk temporarily.

If it’s your fob, the battery might be out or the programming might have been lost. Regardless of the problem, the actual key should still work in the trunk until the fob itself is repaired.

If the lock is damaged, if you simply don’t have access due to a lack of a key, or if you just aren’t sure what’s going on or what to do, a certified locksmith can not only get you inside, but will also be able to point you in the right direction of what to do next if further repairs are required.

Common Locks for your Home

Opening the door with number combination with woman hand.[/caption]It’s important to feel safe in your home. So while a lock on a door is made for specifically keeping that door securely closed, there are also different types of locks that are designed for either interior or exterior use.

Deadbolt:

This type of lock is one that pretty much everyone has heard of. It’s a metal bolt that goes directly into the doorframe and is one of the most secure varieties on the market. This type is also the one used mainly for exterior doors and is the safest common lock found in and around the home.

Lever handle locks and knob locks:

These locks are more or less the same, but with a physically different shaped handle. The lock itself requires a simple press of a button located in the center of the knob. While these aren’t as secure as a deadbolt, and alone wouldn’t work well for exterior doors, they are great when you just need a little privacy in your own home.

Keyless Entry Pads:

The keyless entry pad is a wonderful way to get in and out of your home without the use of an actual key. This method works great for homes with a large number of people. You only need a code to get in and out. The cons of this are the possibility of battery failure or the code needing to be changed from too many people knowing it.

Smart Locks:

These are the wave of the future. With an app or the assistance of something like Google Home or Amazon Echo, you can lock and unlock your front door even if you aren’t anywhere near it. Cozy in bed and not sure if you locked the front door? Just tell Alexa to do it. Have a ton of groceries to lug in and don’t want to juggle keys while your hands are loaded with bags? Just unlock with the app while in your driveway. Going for a run but don’t want to carry keys? Just tell Siri to take care of it before you pop on that workout playlist.

How Keys Are Made (and How 24/7 Emergency Locksmith Can Make Yours)

An enigma to some and a daily craft for others, the art of key making takes many different forms. Keys cade be duplicated, made from the using just the lock itself, by cutting them with a laser, among many other possibilities. Each way is unique to how it actually pops out a key.

Key duplicators are exactly what they sound like; they make copies of keys from existing ones. Something like this is used when you lose a spare or just need another set of house keys for a boyfriend or girlfriend. The machine uses the existing key as a guide to cut a blank one by grinding it down to match the grooves of the old key.

Code cutters are used when someone loses a key, the most common reason really. How can you make a key from a lock? You have a machine that measures the depth of each groove in the lock and then can be cut into a new blank key. Some keys actually have their ‘key code’ printed on them, as well as some locks, making this process much quicker. Replacing a lost car key is similar although is a little more difficult to key the key code as they have to use your VIN, make, and model of the car to figure it out.

Laser cutters are used for a key that works in a different type of lock. Not all locks use a tumbler method; some use a slider system that requires the keys to be based off of thickness of groves on the side of the key as well. These keys are meant for cars so people can’t use generic keys to break into them, but need a real key to actually work. Funny enough no lasers are used in this machine; it is actually a high-speed bit that uses the ‘key code’ to create grooves and depth at the same time.

24/7 Emergency Locksmith can help you if you need a new key, on the spot. Call us at (484) 891-1922 for 24/7 service.

Tips to Prevent Burglary While on Vacation

Going on vacation is supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable not stressful and worrisome, so why should you have to think about whether or not your homestead is going to be ok while you are gone? You don’t need a high tech security system, which is what most people think. By implementing some of these small tips and tricks you can enjoy that nice sea breeze knowing your house is safe and sound.

Stop Newspaper Delivery and Hold Mail

One of the most obvious signs that someone is out of town is when their mail and newspapers begin to pile up. If you stop deliveries or have someone else pick them up for you your house won’t stick out, it’ll just be another house on the block.

Set Timers On Your Lights

Another thing a burglar will be looking for is whether or not there are lights on in the house for a few days. A way to avoid keeping your lights on the whole time you are on vacation is to set up a few timers. Have them in some main rooms of the house, kitchen, livening room, and maybe a bedroom and voila it looks like someone is home at night!

Don’t Post on Social Media

I know I know, everyone is always very eager to let everyone on Facebook and Twitter know the exciting place they are going on vacation. However, when you let your friends and family know where you’re going you also let all the burglars and thieves of the world know too. Just wait until you get back and post all your pictures from the comfort and security of your living room couch.

Four Places to Hide Your Spare Car Key

Hiding your spare key under a rock is so old hat (but you can still check out Instructables.com to make your own.) Having a spare car key is a good idea for a multitude of reasons. Of course, if you lock your keys in your car or forget where you placed them, knowing that you have a spare set is one of the best feelings in the world. And, if you gave your spare to someone else, you know that there is always another option if you lock your keys in your car or misplace them.

So, what are some of the best spots to hide your spare car key? Let’s take a look.

Hide it on the Car

This may not be for everyone, and probably one of the first places a thief will look, but hiding your key in a magnetic box on your car is one of the most popular places. If you’re going to go this route, try to find somewhere a little more creative than under the wheel well.

In Your Purse or Wallet

Sometimes the most obvious places are the best. Keeping your spare key in your wallet or purse makes finding that spare key, or having it when you’re away from home, that much easier.

With Your Neighbor

If you trust your neighbor, keeping a key with them can be helpful. Of course, if you lose your key at 2 a.m., they might not be that happy about it.

In a Unique Spot

If you’re hiding it under a rock near your front door, that spare key may not last there too long. Why not look for a few more unique spots on your property that may be a little harder for a random person to guess, but somewhere you’ll never forget. Hiding it inside vinyl siding or even using a fake sprinkler (instead of a fake rock) may be smart moves.

If you lose your key and don’t have a spare, you need to make a spare, or you can’t find either, be sure to call 24/7 Emergency Locksmith!

Some Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for the Car Lover in Your Life

Valentine’s Day can sometimes be pretty difficult to buy presents for a loved one. Do you go the basic roses and candy route? That’s boring. What about a diamond necklace? Maybe she already has one. And, let’s be honest, it’s sometimes even harder to buy a Valentine’s Day present for that man in your life. Thankfully, we were able to take a look at some great ideas that you might want to look at for this Valentine’s Day for the car lover in your life.

1. Lifeline AAA Road Kit: If you don’t already have a kit similar to this in your car, or your loved one’s car, it’s a must buy!

2. Armor All Complete Car Care Kit: Want to keep your car looking great? You’ll need something like this and a little bit of elbow grease.

3. Cup Holder Multi USB Car Charging Port: This is a great item if you have kids who have their own devices that need power in the backseat! It’s great for traveling.

4. Ziraki Memory Foam Lumbar Cushion: Comfort can’t ever really be overrated. If you drive a lot, this can put the ease on your lower back.

5. Car Vacuum: Lugging out your vacuum to your car from your house is always a hassle. Keep one in there and you’ll always be ready to suck up those french fries!

The Hardest Cars to Break Into

While we’d never use our powers for evil, there are still people out there who make breaking into cars a habit.

Here are some of the cars that are the hardest to break into. If you own one and get locked out, though, don’t worry, we’ll get you back on the road in no time.

BMW and Mercedes

Both of these higher end cars use double locking mechanisms that make them pretty difficult to break in. Even if you break the window, you can’t open the door from the inside on many models. Play it safe and make sure you have spares available.

Honnda Accord

A Honda Accord? Yep. While these may not be BMWs or Mercedes, they do present a unique problem with their build. The space between the auto body and the door on these cars is very narrow, making it difficult to break into by trying to unlock the door.

Lexus

Maybe not surprisingly, Lexus cars are difficult to break into because the button in the door frame is designed to drop down quickly after it is lifted.

No matter what car you have, though, we’ll be able to help you out if you’re ever in a lockout situation. Be sure to save our number!

Your 24/7 Emergency Locksmith New Year’s Resolutions

While you’re thinking about hitting up the gym more or perhaps reading more books as your New Year’s resolutions this year, you should also take a second to think about your locks as well!

Here are a few New Year’s resolutions we think could help you out as you go into 2018.

Remember Your Keys This Year:

Forgetting our keys is a snafu that everyone goes through seemingly at least once a month. Some good tips on remember your keys include keeping them in the same spot, buying a specific item (like a soap dish or a hook) to keep them in, or even putting a note on the door the night before.

Stock Up Your Car:

Most people don’t think about the things that they keep in their car on a daily basis simply because they never need them. However, equipping your car with items such as a first-aid kit, road flares, extra clothing and blankets, and even bottled water can go a long way if you happen to find yourself in an emergency situation.

Take a Look at Your Home Locks:

We’ve all received some great Christmas presents this year, but sometimes the most important part of your home, the locks, can go unchanged for years. Be sure to give us a call and we can take a look at what you have an suggest any changes.

Keep Our Phone Number Handy

: No one plans to get locked out, but you can plan to have us already saved in your phone so that we can get to you quickly. Be sure to add (484) 891-1922 to your phone and we’ll always be there when you need us.

From everyone at 24/7 Emergency Locksmith, Happy New Year!
