Tips for Waiting by Your Car in the Lehigh Valley

Cars and Coffee in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
24/7 Emergency Locksmith will be onsite to help you with your emergency lockout situation usually in minutes, which is important when it’s late at night or you’re in an area you’re not familiar with.

And while we are dedicated to getting to you in the Lehigh Valley quickly, we also want to share some tips on how to wait by your car safely whether it’s for a few minutes or a few hours.

Look for a Safe Location

Your car may not be the safest location for you to wait for a locksmith or a tow truck, if your situation is a bit more serious. Gas stations, restaurants, and open stores are good places to safely wait for help to arrive.

Don’t Accept Rides from Strangers After You’ve Made Your Emergency Call

If you already have help on the way, and they know where you are, the most important thing to do is to stay in that location and wait for them to arrive. Accepting a ride from a stranger to go somewhere else won’t be helpful.

Tell Trusted People What Your Plan Is

After you’ve made arrangements for help, be sure to also call a family member or friend and let them know what is going on. Tell them where you are, share your GPS location with them even, and tell them what company you called for help.

As always, call 24/7 Emergency Locksmith at (484) 891-1922 and we will be there in a few minutes to help you with your lockout needs. If you need more serious assistance, always dial 911.

Where to Park During Musikfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Musikfest is the most attended free music festival in the country and that means it can sometimes be a pain to get parking.

Thankfully, with a little bit of planning, you hopefully won’t have to drive around forever. Here are a few suggestions on where to park or what to look for before you venture down to Musikfest!

If You Drive All the Way In

If you decide to drive into downtown Bethlehem for Musikfest, you’ll want to look for some private lots first. Many private lots are owned by churches or local companies and are usually pretty safe spots as there are people there for most of the day. These usually cost anywhere from $5 to $20 for the day. You may want to try one of them first because the closer you get to downtown Bethlehem, the harder it can be to find parking.

If you must go into the heart of Musikfest, you may want to consider buying a new ParkPlatz Pass that allows you to park on Moravian College’s South Campus. These are sold on a first come first served basis and are ONLY available in advance.

If you don’t want to do that, you can take your chances with the Walnut Street and/or New Street parking garages. Be warned that getting a spot there will be tough and leaving can be tougher.

If You Don’t Drive All the Way In

Musikfest list numerous options for satellite parking for their shuttle bus service provided by TransBridge Bus Lines.

You can refer to their rather extensive list on their website and plan ahead!

Uber It Up

Last but not least, if you want to take Uber or Lyft, you’ll find more than a few drivers available at all hours of the day and night in and around Musikfest. Uber and Lyft can be life savers, but be sure to take precautions and always match up your driver with the driver listed on your app.

No matter how you get into Musikfest, we hope to see you there. Be safe!

And, as always, if you find yourself in a lockout situation, 24 Emergency Locksmith will be there day or night to help you out/

Can Wrapping Your Key Fob in Aluminum Foil Protect it From Thieves?

While it may not be prominent in the Lehigh Valley, there have been reports of thieves throughout the country using special technology to steal the signals from key fobs, giving them access to your vehicle.

Clarkcom recently published an experiment where they tested the effectiveness of using aluminum foil to protect a keyfob’s signal from being detected.

Team Clark wanted to see if it really works, so we wrapped one piece of aluminum foil around a key fob and tried to unlock a car from about 10 feet away — it didn’t unlock.

Next, we moved closer to the vehicle — about a foot away — and the car unlocked with the foil around the key.

After that, we added additional layers of aluminum foil around the key fob. That blocked the signal from a close distance. The car wouldn’t unlock until we began unwrapping the fob.

The bottom line: Foil really does seem to block the unwanted signals if you wrap your key fob thoroughly!

But is this really necessary? If you park in a secured area, perhaps the answer is no. But for those times when you’re leaving your car in an open parking lot, one of these signal-blocking solutions may give you peace of mind. Source: Clark.com

Prevent Keyless Car Theft in the Lehigh Valley with a Microwave?

More and more people open their cars with a key fob via keyless lock entry. It’s almost second nature at this point. Think about it, when is the last time you’ve physically opened your car door with a car key?

For some, it may still be the way that they do get into their vehicles, however, for many it’s a thing of the past.

And while that ease of use makes your life a bit less hectic, it has also created a situation where thieves have begun using the same technology to get inside your car. By using relay amplifiers, some thieves are able to “hack” into your key fob and then use that signal to get into your car.

And while this isn’t a widely reported problem in the Lehigh Valley, it is still something that car owners should be aware of and should at least know how to prevent against.

Here are some tips to prevent car break-ins or theft via keyless thieves:

Key Your Key Fob behind metal

Thieves can’t use their fancy amplifiers effectively if your key fob is hidden behind something metal or inside something like a microwave. Get creative!

Park in a garage

Sure, this is obvious, but if they can’t get at the car, it doesn’t matter what they are using to try to break into it.

Use old methods

Remember The Club? There is still something to be said for “old-school” theft deterrent methods.

Increase home security

Using home security systems with cameras is a great way to deter thieves who are attempting to get at signal from your key fob.

Again, while this isn’t a widely reported Lehigh Valley phenomenon just yet, we want to be sure that you are aware of it and know how to guard against it!

How to Lock a Door Without a Lock

24/7 Emergency Locksmith can and will be onsite quickly to help you with any sort of lock emergency. That emergency may be you locked out of your car in a busy parking lot or that may mean that the lock on your home has malfunctioned. Before you ever need to look at ways to lock a door without a lock, be sure to contact us by calling (484) 891-1922!

All that being said, if you ever do find yourself in the position where you need to lock a door without the lock that is usually attached to it, we do have a few suggestions. Again, please know that these suggestions are temporary at best and calling 24/7 Emergency Locksmith should be your first course of action.

1. Use a Door Jam or Wedge

Using a door jam or wedge is a good way to keep a door from opening. It’s a simple and temporary solution that can keep a door secure for a short period of time. Simply use a door wedge and gently hammer or wedge it into the space between the door and the frame. Keep in mind that wedges will only really work on doors that are designed to open inwards.

2. Anchoring a Doorknob

For outward opening doors, wedges wouldn’t be very effective. So, you could consider anchoring the inside doorknob to something within your house or building. You can do this by tying a piece of rope to the doorknob and then another fixed structure within the room. Of course, this method wouldn’t work very well on inwardly opening doors.

3. A Good ‘Ole Barricade

If you’ve ever watched “The Walking Dead” then you you’ve seen your fair share of barricades. All you need are a bunch of items and a door that opens inwardly, though, a well-constructed barricade could also work on an outwardly opening door where the entire entrance of the structure is covered by the barricade itself.

4. Take the Doorknob Off

You’ve probably been in the situation where a doorknob has fallen off of a door before and maybe even come off in your hand. Usually when this happens you’re able to open the door and fix the handle set. However, if you take off the doorknob and the spindle from the outside of a door, you’re effectively restricting someone from using the knob to release the latch. This isn’t the best method of locking a door in a pinch, but it may work for a short period of time.

5. Call 24/7 Emergency Locksmith

We’d much rather you give us a call at (484) 891-1922 than try to employ any of the methods we have described above! We’ll be out in minutes. Your safety is our main priority.

Four Times to Change the Locks on Your Home in the Lehigh Valley

Most people have been in a situation where they have thought to themselves, “Hmm, maybe I should change my locks.”

But, what does that really mean and why should you do it?

We take a look at a few reasons you should change your locks in the Lehigh Valley.

You Just Bought a Previously Lived-in Home: We all want to trust people and we all want to give the benefit of the doubt, but, let’s be honest, it’s best to start fresh. If you are buying a home in which someone has lived before, it’s a fantastic idea not only to get all of the keys from them, but to rekey the entire home.

You Bought a Brand New Home
: So, instead of buying a home from someone who has lived there for awhile, you just bought a home that was just built. No worries about keys, right? Wrong. Even though it’s a new home, there are still people who have had access to keys to your home including contractors and real estate agents. You’re always better off rekeying.

Someone Has Moved Out: No matter the trust level you have with a person, if they move out of your home after having access to keys to your home, it’s time to rekey that home. Your friends may have the best intentions, but if you don’t know where your keys are heading, you have to take care of yourself.

You Lost Your Keys: No one wants to admit that they have actually lost their keys. We are going to look to the ends of the Earth to find them. But, if you come to a point where you know that you’ve actually lost them, it’s imperative that you change your home locks right away.

Thankfully, 24/7 Emergency Locksmith is able to help you with changing your home locks immediately!

Call us at (484) 891-1922 and let’s get started.

How to Avoid a Locksmith Scam in the Lehigh Valley

The need for a locksmith can be an unwelcome and/or irritating situation. From locking yourself out of your car, losing the keys to your office building, or simply changing the locks to your new home, the moments that it takes to call a locksmith can be stressful enough as it is, and can be done in a time of panic, worry, or stress.

But when that time arises, there are some people who will try to scam your hard earned money at a when you’re most vulnerable and perhaps don’t have the best knowledge of what is going on.

Here are a few tips to avoid being scammed by a faux locksmith:

1. Find a locksmith ahead of time. The BBB and other reliable sources like Yelp and Facebook reviews can assure you that you have a real company to call if you find yourself in trouble. Just save the contact in your phone and you’ll have the info available immediately.
Avoid companies that don’t answer the phone with a specific business name. If someone just says the phrase “locksmith services” or something to that affect but won’t give an actual company name, chances are they’re not legitimate.

2. Ask for ID and written proof of a company with a name, address, and other items like website, telephone number, and even a company email. Also be aware of what the person arrives in. Most companies have a van or vehicle with the company name and logo displayed on it.

3. If it isn’t an immediate matter, get an estimate on legitimate company letterhead paper or from a company email. An email that is @gmail, @yahoo, @aol etc. is a big red flag. This estimate should include not just the lock cost, but also mileage and other additional charges that may be included in the final cost.

4. While PA doesn’t, there are 14 states that require locksmiths to be licensed. Those states are: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Maryland hasn’t yet implemented it yet, although they have now adopted this law. So if you are in one of these states, ask for that too.

5. If they say the lock needs to be drilled, especially if they have given little to no effort to open the lock prior, go with someone else. Not only does a professional locksmith know how to open almost any lock, but drilling is much more expensive and damaging to the surrounding frame of the lock.

5 Simple Tips to Keep Your Car Safe from Thieves

Sometimes, we go on auto pilot when it comes to our car. We’re used to driving to many of the same places and used to perhaps parking in the same location each and every night. And even though habit and routine can be good things, it’s always a good idea to make sure that you’re always keeping your car as safe from potential thieves as possible. Your vehicle is a big investment!

Here are a few tips you can keep in mind to give you that extra edge against car thieves.

Avoid Leaving Valuables In Your Car

We know, we know. It can be a pain to always have to remove things from your car at the end of the day, but if you’re leaving something in sight that may be of some value, it may catch the eye of someone who’s willing to break into your car to get it.

Park Where There’s Light

Parking where it’s well-lit is always a good idea, no matter where you are. If your home doesn’t have any external lighting, perhaps it’s time to start looking into adding some.

Lock Your Car

Seems pretty simple, right? We can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen people post on social media about reminding people to lock their car doors because they just had something stolen overnight from their own unlocked car.

Shut Your Windows and Sun Roof

Again, a pretty simple fix. But, if a thief can get into your car easily, they are probably going to go for it. If they have trouble getting in, the odds are better that they will move on.

Consider an Anti-Theft Device

Many new cars already come with some sort of alarm or theft deterrent built in, which is great. If your car doesn’t have one, or if you simply want to upgrade what you already have, it can pay off to be overly safe.

As always, we’re here for you if you find yourself in a lock out situation. Call us (484) 891-1922.
