Tips for Taking Care of Your Keys

You don’t really care about your keys until you can’t find them or can’t use them because they are damaged or broken.

Here are some tips for taking care of those keys!

1. Up Your Security

Car keys are one of the first things that a burglar will target in someone’s house. Do you have a safe place to store them that isn’t inside a basket or on a hook in the front door? It’s a good idea to keep them in the same place each and every night. Not only will it make it harder for you to forget them, but you’ll also have peace of mind knowing that they are safe.

2. Make Sure You Have a Spare?

Having a spare key is a great idea, and one that some people tend not to undertake. Have a spare key hidden somewhere on your property that isn’t under a flowerpot in your front yard. Also, it’s smart to give a spare key to a relative or loved one if you are locked out or if an emergency arises.

3. Inspect Your Keys From Time to Time

Keys may seem sturdy, and most are, but they can easily bend or break like anything that’s used on a daily basis. If you notice a bit of a bend on your keys or they aren’t turning like they used to, it’s time to give us a call.

4. Did We Mention Security?

Treat your keys like you do your wallet. Make sure that they aren’t visible when you go out and make sure that you keep them in a safe and secure place on your person. If you do know that your keys have been stolen or lost, we’re here for you.

Tips on Fixing a Flat Tire

Fixing a flat tire may be a simple thing for some and a complicated task for others. And, remember, not everyone had someone to teach them, either!

Here are a few tips on fixing a flat tire. We’d always recommend you learn how to do this on a tire that’s not flat first (practice, that is!)

  1. Be sure you park the car in as safe a place as possible and use hazard lights and flares if necessary.
  2. Brace your tires if possible by using material, such as a piece of wood, to put in front of and behind the other tires to prevent them from rolling when the jack is in use.
  3. Use your owners manual to determine where to safely place the jack and evenly and slowly jack up the car.
  4. Remove hubcaps and loosen the lug nuts.
  5. Make sure the car is up high enough for the tire to smoothly come off.
  6. Attach the spare and retighten the lug nuts.
  7. Check the lug nuts after a few miles of driving to make sure they are secure and don’t drive too fast!

Call for service if you’re in a space you don’t feel safe changing your tire.

If you get locked out, be sure to call us at 484 891 1922!

Locks are fascinating and so important. We use them every single day yet rarely pay them too much mind. So, just for a minute, unlock this combination of five lock facts that will blow your mind!*

Early locks were really heavy and made of wood rather than metal.

Padlocks can be traced all the way back to back to ancient Egypt!

Harry Houdini worked as a locksmith early on in his career! It’s true!

Seven Home Safety Tips in the Lehigh Valley

We’re at home a lot of the time right now due to the current world events. And while being at home has its challenges for many, we may not be thinking about safety as much as we should.

Here are a few quick tips to help get your home safety on track.

  1. Don’t leave a key in an obvious spot: How many times have you had to check in on a friend’s house only to find that they hide their spare key under a potted plant or at the top of a door frame? You’re not being sneaky, you’re being obvious. If you’re going to hide a spare key outside, you may want to up your game a little bit.
  2. Give the illusion of activity: We won’t tell you which brands to buy, but there are numerous inexpensive home lighting automation solutions that you can set up via an app to give the appearance of activity even if you’re home alone.
  3. Get some security cameras, lights and motion cameras: The peace of mind is enough to justify the cost of outfitting your home with security cameras. Now is a good time to upgrade your system. Having footage or sound of an incident can be invaluable.
  4. Secure your garage: It’s a weak spot. This goes for side doors as well. You want them to be as secure as any other entrance in your home.
  5. Trim the hedges: Make sure your landscaping doesn’t make it convenient for someone else to hide from view.
  6. Stay in contact with friends and family
  7. Call us to upgrade your home locks or if you’re in a lockout situation

Be safe and call us if you’re in need of upgrading your lock system!

Do You Have a Hidden Key, Lehigh Valley? Read this!

If you’re like many people, chances are you have a key hidden somewhere in case of an emergency. We’ve covered a few dos and don’ts already. Read about good hiding spots, places to keep your keys, unique hiding spots, and terrible hiding spots. So while you think you might be covered, it’s a good thing to check on your secret hiding spot, just to make sure it’s still good to go in case you need it.

If you have it hidden outdoors, you’re going to want to make sure that it hasn’t been damaged with the elements. A quick inspection can assure there is no rust, which can gunk up a lock or potentially break the key.

You also might want to consider re-hiding it. If you’ve needed it maybe once in the past, simply putting it back in its spot should be ok. But if you’ve needed it a few times, the chances of revealing your hiding place go higher and higher with each use. By finding a new and secure spot, you’re now protected by both a lockout AND someone who might know where the key is.

Lastly, can’t find your key? You might want to consider a reykey of your home. Sure you might’ve just misplaced it, but that isn’t a guarantee. If you don’t know where every copy of that key is, that means there’s a chance someone else has it.So if you need a hand with your locksmithing needs, call us!

What To Do If Your Car Stops Responding When Driving

There aren’t many worse feelings when driving than having your car just die on you. It can happen for a variety of reasons, but the most important thing is making sure you get your car to a complete stop before asking for your help.

So, what should you do? Firstly, guide your car to the side of the road as smoothly as possible. The last thing you want to do is panic. Slow the car down slowly. If you lose use of your brakes, try to coast as smoothly as you can to a stop or use your emergency brake if you feel it’s safe to.

If you can get your car restarted the first place you want to go is to the nearest service station. There is something wrong with your car and you can’t ignore it! If you can’t get the car restarted, put on your emergency flashers or get out your flares and call for help.

Be safe, Lehigh Valley!

Unique Keys: Gumball and Candy Machines

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of when you were a kid and your mom handed you a quarter to get a piece of candy at the gumball machine in the grocery store.

Not only are these retro looking devices cool to look at, they have some unique keys as well.

While there isn’t a universal type of key for these types of machines, there are two that are most common. The first is sometimes referred to as a tubular or barrel key, while the second looks similar to a house key.

The first key is shaped similar to a barrel and you’ve probably noticed the ring shaped keyhole when you’ve popped the coin in while waiting for your prize as you hear the key turn!

You may have also noticed this type of lock on some home safes as well.

The second key type looks almost identical to a lock and key you’d see in your home’s exterior doors. Here’s a really neat video of a vintage gumball machine restoration that gives you a good idea of how some of these machines operate. Plus, it’s very relaxing to watch.
