Tips on Fixing a Flat Tire

Fixing a flat tire may be a simple thing for some and a complicated task for others. And, remember, not everyone had someone to teach them, either!

Here are a few tips on fixing a flat tire. We’d always recommend you learn how to do this on a tire that’s not flat first (practice, that is!)

  1. Be sure you park the car in as safe a place as possible and use hazard lights and flares if necessary.
  2. Brace your tires if possible by using material, such as a piece of wood, to put in front of and behind the other tires to prevent them from rolling when the jack is in use.
  3. Use your owners manual to determine where to safely place the jack and evenly and slowly jack up the car.
  4. Remove hubcaps and loosen the lug nuts.
  5. Make sure the car is up high enough for the tire to smoothly come off.
  6. Attach the spare and retighten the lug nuts.
  7. Check the lug nuts after a few miles of driving to make sure they are secure and don’t drive too fast!

Call for service if you’re in a space you don’t feel safe changing your tire.

If you get locked out, be sure to call us at 484 891 1922!

5 Mind Blowing Facts About Locks

Locks are fascinating and so important. We use them every single day yet rarely pay them too much mind. So, just for a minute, unlock this combination of five lock facts that will blow your mind!*

Early locks were really heavy and made of wood rather than metal.

Padlocks can be traced all the way back to back to ancient Egypt!

Speaking of Egypt, keys were a symbol of wealth in that period of time due to the fact that few could afford safes or doors with locks.

Harry Houdini worked as a locksmith early on in his career! It’s true!

The 16th-century Russian Ivan The Terrible locked his wife in her room before he went off to war. She was probably not happy about it.

Those are some mind blowing facts about locks!

*they may not blow your mind but maybe they will

What To Do If Your Car Stops Responding When Driving

There aren’t many worse feelings when driving than having your car just die on you. It can happen for a variety of reasons, but the most important thing is making sure you get your car to a complete stop before asking for your help.

So, what should you do? Firstly, guide your car to the side of the road as smoothly as possible. The last thing you want to do is panic. Slow the car down slowly. If you lose use of your brakes, try to coast as smoothly as you can to a stop or use your emergency brake if you feel it’s safe to.

If you can get your car restarted the first place you want to go is to the nearest service station. There is something wrong with your car and you can’t ignore it! If you can’t get the car restarted, put on your emergency flashers or get out your flares and call for help.

Be safe, Lehigh Valley!

Unique Keys: Gumball and Candy Machines

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of when you were a kid and your mom handed you a quarter to get a piece of candy at the gumball machine in the grocery store.

Not only are these retro looking devices cool to look at, they have some unique keys as well.

While there isn’t a universal type of key for these types of machines, there are two that are most common. The first is sometimes referred to as a tubular or barrel key, while the second looks similar to a house key.

The first key is shaped similar to a barrel and you’ve probably noticed the ring shaped keyhole when you’ve popped the coin in while waiting for your prize as you hear the key turn!

You may have also noticed this type of lock on some home safes as well.

The second key type looks almost identical to a lock and key you’d see in your home’s exterior doors. Here’s a really neat video of a vintage gumball machine restoration that gives you a good idea of how some of these machines operate. Plus, it’s very relaxing to watch.

Be Safe During Lehigh Valley Parades

Winter is clearing way for warmer weather, bicycles, motorcycles, runners, joggers, children at play, and, yes, even parades!

There are many parades throughout the Lehigh Valley beginning this time of the year with the Parade of the Shamrocks parade in Bethlehem and the Allentown St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

So, while it may be common sense to some, here are some tips for you to keep yourself, and others, safe at your local parade.

  1. The Parade isn’t just downtown: Parades bring in higher than normal traffic, more people on the streets, and, of course, floats! Be careful driving even if you’re not close to “parade central.”
  2. Keep the little ones close: Parades are essentially circuses on wheels and there is a lot going on! It’s easy to loose track of things like where you parked, but it’s also important to remember to keep your children close to you!
  3. Watch out for floats: We touched on them in number 1, but prepare to see some interesting vehicles that may or may not be street legal.
  4. Don’t run up to floats for candy: Many parades have straight out disallowed throwing anything from floats due to the risk it can present to children running into the street. If your parade does allow for candy throwing, don’t run up and get any that is too far away from your arm’s reach! It’s not worth it.
  5. Have a great time: one of the best things about living in the Lehigh Valley are the parades and festivals. Enjoy!
