Be Safe During Lehigh Valley Parades

Winter is clearing way for warmer weather, bicycles, motorcycles, runners, joggers, children at play, and, yes, even parades!

There are many parades throughout the Lehigh Valley beginning this time of the year with the Parade of the Shamrocks parade in Bethlehem and the Allentown St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

So, while it may be common sense to some, here are some tips for you to keep yourself, and others, safe at your local parade.

  1. The Parade isn’t just downtown: Parades bring in higher than normal traffic, more people on the streets, and, of course, floats! Be careful driving even if you’re not close to “parade central.”
  2. Keep the little ones close: Parades are essentially circuses on wheels and there is a lot going on! It’s easy to loose track of things like where you parked, but it’s also important to remember to keep your children close to you!
  3. Watch out for floats: We touched on them in number 1, but prepare to see some interesting vehicles that may or may not be street legal.
  4. Don’t run up to floats for candy: Many parades have straight out disallowed throwing anything from floats due to the risk it can present to children running into the street. If your parade does allow for candy throwing, don’t run up and get any that is too far away from your arm’s reach! It’s not worth it.
  5. Have a great time: one of the best things about living in the Lehigh Valley are the parades and festivals. Enjoy!

Spring Driving Tips for the Lehigh Valley

Spring is just around the corner, even if it feels like it’s been here this whole winter already! And, while we may not have had feet of snow this winter in the Lehigh Valley, the changing of seasons still calls for a few reminders.

Let’s take a look.

Look out for potholes: This is usually more evident during heavy precipitation winters when more utility vehicles are on the roads, causing many potholes. And, even though we may have not gotten enough snow to build many snowmen this year, potholes will still be around.

Rain, rain, go away: Spring showers can come on quickly. Be sure your wipers are ready for the rain and so are you!

More people will be out and about: Watch out for people on the move. From high school teams to neighbors out for a quick job, you want to watch out for more people possibly crossing the roads.

Look for motorcycles: Share the road!

Inspect your tires and maintain proper air pressure: the change in temperature means you’ll want to check your tires to make sure they are at their optimal PSI to ensure long life and proper handling.

Get Your Car Ready for the Spring in the Lehigh Valley

We haven’t had much of a winter this year. In fact,  but that still doesn’t mean you can coast into spring without giving the old whip a once over.

Let’s go over some of the basics. Of course, you’re going to want to change your oil and your oil filter. That’s just one of the basics when you change from one season to another.

You’ll want to check your other fluids as well and make sure that they are at appropriate levels.

Even though they may not have done a ton of work this season, check the wiper blades and most likely replace them. Wiper blades are often an overlooked but vital component to driving safely!

Make sure your charger system is working and check your internal and extern lighting systems.

Any good once over also includes bringing your car into your trusted service station or person (maybe yourself) who handles that!

All in all, just remember to take a look at what you’re driving around in. It’s what keeps you safe!

At the minimum, LockPickingLawyer shows you some of the consumer grade safes, lockboxes, or locks that you may want to steer clear of if you’re looking for a more secure and reliable solution for your needs.

You can watch the video at this link.

Hey Lehigh Valley, Should you replace or repair old locks in your home?

When you are fixing up a fixer-upper, lots of questions can arise. One question at the top of the list is most likely home security.

When your home is full of old and outdated locking mechanisms, what do you do?

That question isn’t answered with just a simple yes you do or no you don’t.

In fact, it should be preceded by even more questions.

Here are some of the questions you should be asking:

-How old are the locks?

-Are they functioning?

-Are they part of the aesthetic of the old home?

-Are they safe?

-Do they fit the needs of what I need currently?

-Between replacing and repairing, which is in my budget?

-Do I want to save some but replace/repair others?

-Can I function with an older locking system?

-Can the older locks be partially updated?

Basically, there are many options out there and you just don’t know what you’ll need to do until you get in there and start answering some serious questions. And if you’re just not sure how to get started, call us! We can evaluate and determine what we think is the best route to go, and help you get there!

What To Do If You Drive Your Car Into a River

We realize that driving into a river is a rare thing, but it happens. We guess. From time to time.

So, in the off chance that you do find yourself in a situation where you find yourself in a river and in a car, then the following information from SmartDriving can help you out!

  • Release your seatbelts and open the windows – be aware that the seatbelts might not retract; take care not to get tangled
  • If your head restraints are removable, pull them out when you release your seatbelt to enable easy passage for rear passengers – you can also use the head restraints to smash the side windows if necessary
  • If your windows jam, try to break them. An ’emergency hammer’ is ideal; a steering wheel security lock will do; or kick hard.
  • You may be able to open a door, but if you can, it’s probably better to exit through a window
  • The car will sink ‘heavy end’ first (the heavy end is where the engine is). In deeper water it may flip onto its roof
  • In a car that sinks front first, there will be a bubble of air in the back, but you should stay in the front … the front windows are often bigger and easier to get out of — for all passengers
  • The car won’t sink immediately, even with the windows open, however you must use every moment to free yourself and passengers and get out. Push children out first
  • It may seem obvious – but don’t try to save anything except lives. Computers, phones, purses, jewellery, etc. can be replaced – you can’t!
  • If you are unable to open a window, there is the equalisation option as a last resort. Keep your head. There should be enough air for the minute or two that it will take to prepare to escape. When the car is nearly full of water, take a deep breath and push a door open, you may need to do this with your feet (for extra strength). Note the wait: If you try to open the doors too soon the water pressure will defeat you

Watch a Locksmith Breaking into a Hitch Safe

If you read any of our blogs, you’ll know that we’re big fans of the YouTube account LockPickingLawyer.

While his videos are entertaining, especially to those who work with locks every day, they also shed light on the safety of some of the commercial grade devices we purchase to lock up our stuff.

Take a look at this video in which he gets through a Hitch Safe in pretty quick time. Enjoy!
