Get Your Car Ready for the Spring in the Lehigh Valley

We haven’t had much of a winter this year. In fact,  but that still doesn’t mean you can coast into spring without giving the old whip a once over.

Let’s go over some of the basics. Of course, you’re going to want to change your oil and your oil filter. That’s just one of the basics when you change from one season to another.

You’ll want to check your other fluids as well and make sure that they are at appropriate levels.

Even though they may not have done a ton of work this season, check the wiper blades and most likely replace them. Wiper blades are often an overlooked but vital component to driving safely!

Make sure your charger system is working and check your internal and extern lighting systems.

Any good once over also includes bringing your car into your trusted service station or person (maybe yourself) who handles that!

All in all, just remember to take a look at what you’re driving around in. It’s what keeps you safe!

Our Favorite YouTube Locksmith is Back!

Each  month, we try to share a video from one of our favorite YouTubers, LockPickingLawyer.  If you’ve seen some of his videos in the past, you know that he’s all about showing you either how to get into a safe or lockbox or lock, but he also exposes them for what could possibly be false advertising.

At the minimum, LockPickingLawyer shows you some of the consumer grade safes, lockboxes, or locks that you may want to steer clear of if you’re looking for a more secure and reliable solution for your needs.

You can watch the video at this link.

Not every lock is made the same, this is why it’s important to hire a professional locksmith to help you when you need to protect yourself, your family, your vehicle, and your important items.

Call us today for more information on how we can help you: 484 891 1922!

Unique Keys: Paracentric

There are a ton of types of keys out there, and while some are more well known than others, the paracentric key is most certainly a unique one.

Not only are they unusual, but they also aren’t used for just any application. The paracentric key is mainly used in prisons. This is because of their unique shape and design that make picking the paracentric locks that they open incredibly difficult… something that is especially important in an incarceration setting.

Generally, paracentric keys will have very small teeth at the end of the key in addition to a contorted blade.Have you ever found a unique key in an old desk drawer or at your latest flea market adventure? Post in the comments and we might just let you know what kind of key you’ve found!

Hey Lehigh Valley, Should you replace or repair old locks in your home?

When you are fixing up a fixer-upper, lots of questions can arise. One question at the top of the list is most likely home security.

When your home is full of old and outdated locking mechanisms, what do you do?

That question isn’t answered with just a simple yes you do or no you don’t.

In fact, it should be preceded by even more questions.

Here are some of the questions you should be asking:

-How old are the locks?

-Are they functioning?

-Are they part of the aesthetic of the old home?

-Are they safe?

-Do they fit the needs of what I need currently?

-Between replacing and repairing, which is in my budget?

-Do I want to save some but replace/repair others?

-Can I function with an older locking system?

-Can the older locks be partially updated?

Basically, there are many options out there and you just don’t know what you’ll need to do until you get in there and start answering some serious questions. And if you’re just not sure how to get started, call us! We can evaluate and determine what we think is the best route to go, and help you get there!

What To Do If You Drive Your Car Into a River

We realize that driving into a river is a rare thing, but it happens. We guess. From time to time.

So, in the off chance that you do find yourself in a situation where you find yourself in a river and in a car, then the following information from SmartDriving can help you out!

  • Release your seatbelts and open the windows – be aware that the seatbelts might not retract; take care not to get tangled
  • If your head restraints are removable, pull them out when you release your seatbelt to enable easy passage for rear passengers – you can also use the head restraints to smash the side windows if necessary
  • If your windows jam, try to break them. An ’emergency hammer’ is ideal; a steering wheel security lock will do; or kick hard.
  • You may be able to open a door, but if you can, it’s probably better to exit through a window
  • The car will sink ‘heavy end’ first (the heavy end is where the engine is). In deeper water it may flip onto its roof
  • In a car that sinks front first, there will be a bubble of air in the back, but you should stay in the front … the front windows are often bigger and easier to get out of — for all passengers
  • The car won’t sink immediately, even with the windows open, however you must use every moment to free yourself and passengers and get out. Push children out first
  • It may seem obvious – but don’t try to save anything except lives. Computers, phones, purses, jewellery, etc. can be replaced – you can’t!
  • If you are unable to open a window, there is the equalisation option as a last resort. Keep your head. There should be enough air for the minute or two that it will take to prepare to escape. When the car is nearly full of water, take a deep breath and push a door open, you may need to do this with your feet (for extra strength). Note the wait: If you try to open the doors too soon the water pressure will defeat you

Watch a Locksmith Breaking into a Hitch Safe

If you read any of our blogs, you’ll know that we’re big fans of the YouTube account LockPickingLawyer.

While his videos are entertaining, especially to those who work with locks every day, they also shed light on the safety of some of the commercial grade devices we purchase to lock up our stuff.

Take a look at this video in which he gets through a Hitch Safe in pretty quick time. Enjoy!

Funny Lock Fails

In the world of locksmithing, there are quite a variety of unique situations that can arise. While some are just silly, some are also seriously concerning. Others are weirdly impressive with the MacGyvering people will do to avoid calling a locksmith. Here are three ridiculous examples we found on the internet that we just had to share!

Keys In-Between Doors

Yikes… Although we’re also fascinated with all of the things that had to go wrong within a matter of moments to make this happen.

Chain Ring Around Knob

That’s one way to keep a door closed. Or, you know, you could install an actual lock that won’t damage your door frame when someone tries to open the door.

Socket Wrench Lock

This door and frame need a lot of love (ok maybe replacement is really the word we’re looking for.) Anyhoo, we are genuinely impressed with the layers of neglect that got this sad excuse of security to where it is in this photo.Need someone to do it the right way? We’ve got you with all your locksmith if needs! Call us!

Does Your Key Fob have a Secret or Two?

While a keyfob unlocks your vehicle (duh) it might also have other handy dandy features as well. While some are obvious, others might not be. Here are a few things your key fob might do other than lock and unlock your car or truck.

Vehicle Summon
Ok so this is really only a Tesla thing, sorry Toyota owners, and is only for certain models. But with a quick button combo, your vehicle is out waiting for you on a rainy day.

An Actual Key
Fob not working? Some keyless fobs actually have a key tucked away inside. That way you can still get inside and back on the road.

Remote Start
Too warm or too hot out? A remote start gets your car to a nice temp before you’re off to work.

Mirror Folding
Keep your side views safe with a click of a button.

Put Down the Windows
Need some fresh air in your vehicle? No problem if your fob has the power! However with all these potential features, you don’t know what you’ve got until you look it up.

Check out the owners manual or look it up online to see if your keyfob has any extra abilities.Lastly, be careful. If your fob rolls down your windows, for example, make sure you don’t actually activate that feature on a rainy day.Does your fob have any cool extras you didn’t know about? Tell us on our Facebook page!
