Night Driving in the Lehigh Valley Tips

With sunset getting earlier and earlier during the fall and winter months, we wanted to brush off a few night driving tips to help you keep safe in the dark hours.

  1. Dim your interior lights: Having dash lights set up to 10 can be distracting. Dim those things down and focus on the road.
  2. Don’t stare at bright lights: Oncoming lights can easily take your eyes off the road, especially those super bright ones. Try to keep them out of your direct field of vision.
  3. Clean your windshield: You can get away with a dirty windshield when it’s bright out, but when it’s dark, lights coming through a dirty windshield can get you in trouble. A dirty windshield can also limit your field of vision. Clean that up.
  4. Go to the eye doctor: Not having the right prescription or not having a prescription at all (if you need one) can directly affect how well you can drive at night. Make sure you’re taking care of your eyes!
  5. Drive more slowly: You’re a great driver, we’re sure, but other people are also driving at night who maybe aren’t. Be sure to be a bit more defensive when driving after dark.

Be careful out there and call us if you find yourself in a lock out situation! 484 891 1922

When Will Peak Fall Foliage Be in the Lehigh Valley in 2020?

When is peak fall foliage in Pennsylvania this year? Our friends over at PA Weather Action released this comprehensive map detailing some of the best times you can head out to see what we feel is the best place for autumn in all of the United States!

It looks like the Lehigh Valley can see the best off the fall between October 18 and 14.

Key below…

Area A: Fall foliage is expected to peak the week of October 4th – 10th. These high mountains in northern PA will be the first locations in the state to peak. We are watching this region for an early first freeze possible this weekend, but hopefully it’s only a frost for most.

Area B: Fall foliage is anticipated to peak the week of October 11th – 17th. Mountain tops will peak several days before the valleys.

Area C: Fall foliage is expected to peak the week of October 18th – 24th. Ridges will peak a few days before valleys.

Area D: Fall foliage is anticipated to peak the week of October 25th – 31st.

Stay tuned for our list of awesome spots to view fall foliage around the state!

Keep your dorm room safe

With many students just now enjoying the beginning of summer, there is still the excitement of starting classes in a few months. Perhaps this will even be your first time away from home in your brand new dorm room! While it’s exciting to think about your new friends, decor, and independence… it’s also an important time to think about safety and security.

Here are a few things you should think about when preparing for your time in your new dorm on campus.

DON’T PUT YOUR SCHEDULE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

It might be tempting to share out your exciting new class schedule… but don’t. If you want, share it privately with those who need it.

KEEP DOORS AND WINDOWS LOCKED

While you want to enjoy the freedom of college living, also be aware that you should always keep your space secured.

PUT AWAY EXPENSIVE STUFF

That snazzy new laptop might look dope sitting on your desk for all to see, but it just isn’t worth it. Stash expensive items away and out of sight.

INVEST IN A LOCKBOX

This is another level of security for those important items you can’t go without. Keep anything of vital importance locked away when not in use.

LOOK INTO GETTING INSURANCE

This can possibly be added to a parent’s homeowner’s insurance, and can assist in replacing items if they are stolen.

KEEP A BELONGINGS INVENTORY

On this list we recommend also including serial numbers to any missing items, and even using a subtle color coding with stickers or a spot of nailpolish. That way if something goes missing, it’ll be easier to track it down and claim ownership.

Get New Car Keys in the Lehigh Valley in These Easy Steps

Whether you’ve lost your car key, broken it, or just need a copy, it can sometimes be intimidating to go about getting a new one. You may have heard that it can be difficult or even expensive in the Lehigh Valley, which is true if you go to your auto dealership!

Thankfully, getting your key replace (yes, including flip keys) is just about as easy as giving us a call at (484) 891-1922.

STEP 1: LOCATE YOUR VIN

Locate your vin number on your car at the dash or on your insurance card or on your registration. This will help us know how to make the key.

STEP 2: KNOW YOUR MAKE AND MODEL

If we’re coming to you on site, this is something we’ll figure out pretty quickly, but you can also let us know ahead of time.

STEP 3: CALL 24/7 EMERGENCY LOCKSMITH AT (484) 891-1922

Once we have the information you provided us, we’ll be able to get started. We can also cut keys on site and help you replace your key fob as well.

So, if you’re in the Lehigh Valley and you’re in need of a new car key, don’t go to an auto dealership to get the key replaced because that could cost you a lot of your hard earned money. Instead, get in touch with 24/7 Emergency Locksmith!

Be Safe During Trick or Treat in the Lehigh Valley

From Emmaus to Easton, Halloween is coming to the Lehigh Valley and trick-or-treaters will be out and about throughout the towns. Here are a few tips to stay safe!

Since this time of year also coincides with earlier sunsets, it’s important to take a minute and remember to be cautious while driving this time of year.

  • Be sure to get some reflective tape for your child’s trick-or-treat bag or costume. It’s an easy way to be seen and won’t take away from the aesthetic.
  • Traveling in groups is smart. There’s safety in numbers, but remember to bring an adult.
  • When driving, be sure to come to a full and complete stop at all stop signs. I think it’s safe to say we’ve all rolled through a stop sign in our day. When kids see a stop sign, they expect cars to stop.
  • Be sure to balance some of that candy with some healthy snacks as well!

Be safe out there, Lehigh Valley

Keep Your Windshield Frost Free

One of the joys of living in the Lehigh Valley is the chance to experience the full four seasons in all their glory.

Summers are hot and carefree. Autumn is full of color. Spring is vibrant and new!

And winter, well, winter is winter. You’re going to have to deal with it.

To help with that, we put together a few ways to keep your windshield frost free!

  • Cover your windshield with a folded sheet or a rubber mat (or even a proprietary anti-frost product). Just be sure you have somewhere to put it when you take it off in the morning.
  • Try a spray with a 1:2 ration of vinegar or alcohol with water. It will allow you to clear the ice quickly.
  • You can also rub windshield wipers with alcohol if they are sticking to your windshield.
  • Use a night before de-icer.
  • You can run a raw onion half on your windows and windshield the night before. Believe it or not, it works.

Here’s to a healthy and happy winter season!

Tools of the Locksmith Trade

You probably don’t think too much about what’s in your locksmith’s bag when you call him or her to help you get out of a sticky situation. You’re just happy they are there!

We’re going to take a little bit of a look into what a locksmith carries around with them.

Super Mica Bypass Shims: Have you ever tried to unlock a door with a credit card? This is kind of like that, but way more professional.

Tension Tools: “The tension wrench is the first item to go into the lock, and you use it to apply a light amount of pressure. Doing so creates a very tiny ledge – along what we in the trade call ‘The Shearline’ – meaning whether you’re picking, raking, bumping, whatever, the pins have somewhere to ‘sit’ while the other pins are being worked. Get all 5 pins to sit on the shearline and the lock opens. Tension is VERY important, and so are your tension tools.” Source: UKBumpKeys

Half Diamond Lock Pick: “This popular pick form is exclusively used for setting individual pins in the lock. The technique is basically the same as for hook picks. However, due to the triangular form of the pick, the depth for pressing pins down is here limited. Thus, the pins can only be pressed down, until the half-diamond hat gradually widens upwards touches the cylinder core. This feature can be helpful especially at the beginning, as pressing pins too far is avoided.” Source: Picklock24

Hook Pick: “A hook is a great tool for single pin picking, but it has several other uses that make it very dynamic. How many uses you can get out of your particular hook will depend on the size of the hook as well as the size and shape of the keyway.” Source: Unitedlocksmith.net

Rake Pick: “These picks, such as the common snake rake, are designed to rake pins by rapidly sliding the pick past all the pins, repeatedly, in order to bounce the pins until they reach the shear line. This method requires much less skill than picking pins individually, and generally works well on cheaper locks.” Source: Wikipedia

Bump Keys: “When bumping a lock, the key is initially inserted into the key way one notch (pin) short of full insertion. Bumping the key inward forces it deeper into the key way. The specially designed teeth of the bump key transmit a slight impact force to all of the key pins in the lock.” Source: Wikipedia

That’s just a look at some of the tools in a locksmith’s bag. Of course, there are many more!

Get Your Home Ready for Fall, Lehigh Valley!

The change of the seasons is always a good time to take stock in your car, finances, and house! For today, let’s take a look at a few home items you can easily get through on a nice fall weekend.

CHECK FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

These often go overlooked, but are either easy to confirm are still in working order or easy to replace. Make sure everyone in your home knows where they are located.

CHECK YOUR SMOKE DETECTORS

Don’t wait until you hear that super annoying beep! Change the batteries on your smoke detectors or check them to make sure they are still in working order.

HAVE A FIRE ESCAPE PLAN AND FIRE LADDERS ON SECOND AND THIRD STORIES

A little bit of planning can go a long way, especially in an emergency situation.

TURN OFF YOUR OUTDOOR WATER FAUCETS

There’s no reason to keep your outdoor faucets on during the winter months.

MAKE SURE YOUR SECURITY LIGHTS ARE WORKING

Another easy enough test; make sure your security lights are working by testing them out at night!

There obviously may be some other items in your home that aren’t on this list, so take a look around and be sure to use fall to your advantage.
