The Five Stages of Getting Locked Out of your Home or Car

When we’re locked out, the entire situation can be a roller coaster of emotions. But did you know that there’s a process that most everyone goes through when you find yourself locked out of your home or car?

Here are the five stages of locked-out grief.

1. Denial

You’ll be sure that you’re just not opening the door correctly. Next you’ll go around your house or vehicle checking the other doors, convinced one of them MUST be unlocked. They’re not.

2. Anger

You will be furious! You’ll blame yourself or blame the person you are with who was running a little late. You’ll rage about the appointment you’re about to miss. This is the last thing you want to deal with.

3. Bargaining

You’ll try to remember who might have an extra key. You’ll panic and call around while you dig around your bags hoping that the keys might be in a spare pocket, kicking yourself that you should’ve hidden a spare key. (This is the phase when most call a locksmith!)

4. Depression

You’ll be bummed out that your keys might be lost, sad you won’t make it to your hair appointment, or worried about how long the locksmith is going to be. You’re also going to worry if you’ll be able to gain access again without too much of a haste. (Try not to be too worried, you will!!)

5. Acceptance

This can also be considered the deep breath. Whether your keys were found, new ones had to be made, appointments had to be rescheduled, or whatever your day included, you’re no longer locked out and now have a new experience for what to do (and not do) to prevent an occurrence like it from happening again.

If you find yourself in a locked-out situation from your vehicle, home, or place of business, give us a call!

So You Want to Become a Locksmith?

Locksmithing can be a very rewarding, competitive, and long-term career. It’s not for everyone (we are available 24 hours after all) but it is a skill that can provide you freedom and fun!

So, how do you do it? Well, we’ll let our buds at How To Become answer that for us…

Training to become a locksmith often involves a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience. There are many locksmithing schools and training programs located across the country that offer both in-person and online courses. Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) maintains a list of approved training programs on its website, and this can be a good place to start if you are looking for a program.

Students in a locksmithing training program take courses in topics like key identification, key making, lock installation, lock picking, residential locks, commercial locks, automotive locks, electronic access locks, home and business security systems, master key systems, safe and vault locks, and high security locks. Students who complete in-person programs often have opportunities to put their learning into practice on the tools that locksmiths use. Online programs may provide students with tools that they can use to practice at home.

To gain additional hands-on experience, many locksmiths complete an apprenticeship or work as a trainee with an experienced locksmith. Not all locksmiths are willing to take on trainees or apprentices, but many are. An apprentice may perform tasks around the office or go out into the field with an experienced locksmith.

Visit their site to learn a bit more about it and good luck.

Tips to finding (and not losing) your keys at home

We have ALL been there. You go to grab your keys… but they’re gone! This feeling is the worst for so many reasons, many which include the panic of not being able to get into your vehicle, being late to your appointment, and the dread that you might have to replace every single key on your key ring.

We have some simple tips that can help avoid some panic the next time this could happen.

First, retrace your steps. You probably just put them down somewhere and are walking past them over and over again and just looking in the incorrect spot. If something unexpected in your routine happened, there’s a good chance you put them down somewhere unusual. Head to the area and just look in all of the spots you could’ve thrown them down.

Another tip is to install something brightly colored like a key ring or lanyard, that way if they’re missing, that pop of color could easily catch your attention against the familiar decor of your home.

If you have a bag of purse that you carry around, or a jacket with lots of pockets, try checking those pockets you don’t normally use. While you might consciously not put anything in them, the relief of finally getting home means you may have simply thrown your keys into one of them haphazardly.

Another embarrassing place we can sometimes leave them are in the front door. You may have been simply so glad to get home, that you left them hanging in the lock at the door. Try not to be too embarrassed, we’ve all done it.

Another way to find those keys is to purchase an item specifically made for finding them. (Or anything else important you have tendency to misplace.) A small electronic a key chain can be linked to a phone, then activated with an app to emit a sound.

But how do you not loose them in the first place? Routine. The only sure fire way to make sure you don’t ever lose your keys, is to always put them in the same place every single time. Whether it’s a bowl by the front door, a hook next to the coats, or the same pocket in your bag, the only 100% way to never ever lose your keys by your own doing, is to just always know where they are.

So make it a priority to always put them away correctly each time and you’ll, hopefully, never have to worry about misplacing them again.

The Benefits of a Smart Device in Your Home

If you had heard the phrase “smart home” a few years ago, someone might have thought you meant a household full of A+ students.

Nowadays, a smart home is basically a home equipped with electronics, heat, lighting that can be remotely controlled by phone, computer, or smart devices.

While it might be fun to say, ”Alexa, turn on my crockpot,” the safety of your home can be vastly improved with the addition of a few or even many smart devices. The numerous applications to these smart devices and being able to control them without having to be next to them can be a real game-changer.

For starters, many devices require an app to control them while also still working in their traditional ways. A smart lock won’t just lock and unlock with a normal key, but it can also be used with a simple tap of a button in its specific app on your phone.

If you’re someone who is always afraid you’ve left your flat iron on, a smart plug can assure you that if you did, a quick check on the app can make sure it’s taken care of.

Smart plugs work great for lights as well! Whether you just forgot to turn off the porch light right after you got snuggly in bed, want to use your google home to verbally turn off the lights on your first floor, or you’re on vacation and need to turn the front yard Christmas lights on and off, the uses are practically endless. So if you know you’ll be gone a few day’s, a constant rotation of interior lights gives a better impression you’re actually home.

Another type of smart home tools are smart alarms and cameras. Want to see what time your Amazon package was delivered, or check exactly what times the front door was opened and closed? These products not only can be viewed in real time, but they log their info into a database you can access anywhere.

Lastly, a huge item that should be considered is a smart smoke detector. These don’t just act as a traditional detector to warn the occupants of smoke, but they can also inform an alarm company, fire department, and you, if you are away from the residence.

Call us If You Need a Locksmith During St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations in in the Lehigh Valley

The Lehigh Valley area is known for its festivals. Local residents don’t waste any time getting right into the fun of partying as soon as St. Patrick’s Day comes around. Sure, there may be larger and crazier St. Patrick’s Days celebrations across the country, but the Lehigh Valley, specifically with Bethlehem and Allentown’s parades, is one of the best for family friendly fun.

The festivities get started on March 16, 2019 with the Parade of Shamrocks in downtown Bethlehem.

According to Celtic Classic (which organizes the parade), Downtown Bethlehem will be awash in green as Celtic Cultural Alliance hosts the 8th Annual Celtic Classic Parade of Shamrocks! The celebration will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2019. The parade steps off at 1:00 p.m., so get here early for the best viewing spots! The parade will kick-off at 10th Avenue & Broad Street. The parade route will continue east on Broad to Main Street and makes its way south on Main Street, ending under the Hill-To-Hill Bridge.

“We are honored to have your favorite local high school and middle school bands, community groups, pipe bands, dancing groups, local dignitaries, and businesses participate in the parade. Enjoy the festive celebration, then stay after the parade to enjoy some of the great restaurants and shops Bethlehem has to offer.”

The Allentown St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes place on March 17 and should serve to continue the festivities throughout the weekend.

“The first known St. Patrick’s Parade was held in Allentown in the late 1860’s. Almost a century later, in 1955, what we know as the modern day Allentown St. Patrick’s Day Parade was organized by business and political leaders through the St. Patrick’s Day Observance Society. The Parade ran from 12th and Hamilton Streets to the Immaculate Conception Church on Ridge Avenue.”

No matter where you end up this St. Patrick’s Day Weekend, know that 24/7 Emergency Locksmith is there to help you if you find yourself locked out of your vehicle or residence. We’re available 24/7. Call us at (484) 891-1922.

A Little Lehigh Valley Bicycle Lock 101 from 24/7 Emergency Locksmith

Now that spring is on the horizon, it’s time to dust off the old bicycle. Whether it’s for fun or function, a bike is a great way to get from one place to the other.

But one aspect of bicycling that is crucial, beyond obeying the traffic laws and wearing a helmet, is to keep that bike safely locked up when it isn’t in use at all times, even if it is in the supposed safety of your porch or backyard.

But when it comes to choosing a bike lock, what do you do? From U locks to chains, there is quite a selection. You first want to think about the pros and cons. A U lock is more compact, fits through a number of bike parts, and is fairly portable. A chain on the other hand is stronger but it can also be much heavier. It’s up to you, so think about which you’d prefer.

While cable locks are also an option with their flexibility and light weight use, many brands can easily be cut through, so choose this variety with caution. We personally don’t recommend these for that specific reason.

Also be wary of worn and rusted locks. A once reliable piece can be broke quite easily with a skilled thief, so clean your U locks or chains on the regular with the manufacturer’s recommended products and methods to prevent long term and permanent damage.

But what do you do if you lost your key or the key no longer works? That’s easy, call us! Whether you just can’t find your key or the internal mechanisms are gunked up from being exposed to the elements, we’re here to give you a hand if you’re having any problems.

3 Signs That Your Lehigh Valley House is Vulnerable to Burglars (And How to Fix Them)

This post isn’t meant to alarm you, in fact, it is meant to give you more information about what you can do to make your home more safe. So, as you read along, don’t be discouraged, be excited that you can start to change something right away.

Your Front Door

Believe it or not, the front door is the most popular entry location for burglars. Unfortunately, you’re not the only one who leaves their door open at night and that’s not a good sign. Start your home safety revamp by taking a look at that front door and securing it either by locking it each night, or upping your security system game.

Your Trash

Did you get a new 65 inch TV? Why not let the whole neighborhood (and potential burglars) know by putting the box out on the curb. While this seems a bit silly, it’s definitely a billboard to those who also want a 65 inch TV but didn’t want to pay for it. Cut that box up before you put it out to get taken away.

Your Neighborhood

Burglars tend to target more upscale and new developments. That doesn’t mean that you won’t be targeted if you don’t live in one of those areas, however. Burglars also tend to NOT target homes that are in well-lit or conspicuous areas. If you’re able to better light your house from the outside, go for it. Also, it’s a good idea to know your neighbors, or at least those that are immediately next to you. They may see things you don’t see and having better communication with them can only help you both monitor your neighborhood.

We’ll give some more tips in the future, but these are perfect to get you started on better securing your home.

Five Foods That Help You Remember

For anyone who is getting a little up there in age, remembering things can sometimes become an issue. Whether it’s your child’s doctors appointment or where you put your keys, you can easily start forgetting things even at a young age.

A way to combat this is through diet. Here are a few foods that can help you maintain your memory!

Fatty Fish

“Fatty fish” includes salmon, trout and sardines, which are all rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

About 60% of your brain is made of fat, and half of that fat is the omega-3 kind. Your brain uses omega-3s to build brain and nerve cells, and these fats are essential for learning and memory.

Coffee

Addicted to your morning drink? That may not be a bad thing when it comes to your memory. Caffeine has a number of positive effects including increased alertness, improved mood, and sharpened concentration.

Blueberries

Blueberries deliver anthocyanins, a group of plant compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Broccoli

Did your mom try to get you to eat your broccoli? Well, she was pretty smart. Broccoli is packed with antioxidants, vitamin K, and is essential for forming sphingolipids, a type of fat that’s densely packed into brain cells.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate and cocoa powder are packed with a few brain-boosting compounds, including flavonoids, caffeine and antioxidants.

Now, just eat these all day long!
